Create free account[Music] hello and welcome to Pocket Gamer top biz I'm John Jordan and the big news today as we can see Thursday the 19th of September today we have Apple arcade finally gone live so and a bit of tomfoolery to me actually older this so obviously no I guess that to get hold of Apple arcade you need to update to iOS 13 you can see I'm using the new dock mode mmm dark and scary but I was hoping to do this on my iPad but the iPad has been split off into its own iOS and doesn't seem to be the I iPad Thirteen's and seem to be out yet so I've been reduced back to my own iPhone 6s so I'm yeah way back in time I'm not quite sure that was surprised it even supported it but obviously not the top-of-the-range device anymore but we'll see how we get on so this is really just going through a blockade
which is Apple's new $5 a month subscription service and DeCarlo all-you-can-eat as many games as you want to play will be there no in-app purchases no micro transactions no ads different sort of gaming different sort of mobile gaming obviously a very Apple sort of mobile gaming so let's see um okay so just tell us what's going on that's not really okay you can see here a blockade has its own tab now and then you can see these are some of the games that are there okay if we look at the bottom of the of the screen we can see now we have today today games you know the usual new games are going on you know highlighted apps and then we have arcade so this is the new Apple okay as its own tab it's just games
interestingly they've they've kind of them not put it near the games you know the games icon they've kind of put it put it towards the end don't know and so we can play free for a month try it for free I'll say now on iPhone coming soon to iPad Mac an Apple TV so kind of the point is as well as it being kind of these paid games perfectly for free as a subscription you can cross play them so play them on your phone play when your iPad your Mac your Apple TV and obviously everything syncs up so you can stop playing on your phone and then you get on playing the opportunity so that's kind of another reason for it how many people use that it's hard to tell but anyway the sipping goes to work so obviously you have to have payments out but we can kind of see what's going on here you can cancel a time at least
one day before each renewal plan automatically we news until cancelled and I'm in the UK so this is showing $4.99 a month so confirm that obviously you have to sign in passwords which I won't be showing you so just hold on for a minute okay so they'll go signed in what's kind of interesting about that is I don't have a valid credit card attached I don't think I have to look out in moments yes it kind of seems interesting double-check that anyway it doesn't really matter so much we can see here so now we're into arcade we can see everything that's there so one of the big issues is pretty when you're launching something like arcade so there's we know or Apple as you has kind of sighted a hundred games as being part of the subscription they're not all available at launch we reckon there's
probably about 50 over 50 games at launch and it's awfully very difficult we're launched have you have 50 games and you know how you had you curate those now if you're launching with 10 games it was like a you know console launching and you just had a few games it you know not not you know I'm not very good but um but it's gonna then cuz you can't go well as the fighting game in the racing game and but with 50 games that's just you know it's just an enormous number and you want to kind of kind of go through so it's interesting this showcase here so whether it look whether this is on a kind of a rotating basis or whether this is this this game here sanyo nara wild hearts as a music music motorcycle game pretty interesting from simogo well-known mobile developer this seems to be the the the one that they're really showcasing but now we're going you know obviously what we'd expect from from an from an apple app store curation so start your adventure what we play first so we've got some of the big names
I suppose sonic racing and froggy froggy in toys hasn't probably not a big name but you know fro is one of these game to get everyone those even if they won't play it anymore always it's not very interested oh Sh you want to that's a pretty big game I'm surprised that's not a bit bit more prominent than it's like a proper you know proper console game hannes on a switch I believe Lego brawls of the massive brand Chuchu rocket another version future rocket I love teaching rocket and have to say back from the Dreamcast days strange sales Noah deal with AIDS and then suddenly you get to the into this scenario because although some of the big games companies have supported apple arcade so it has particularly been kind of Capcom and Konami and Sega I've got a few games out there Lego for as a as a Ubisoft have got a raid man came out and Gameloft have a baseball
game so you know there are there are some game come his own early but there's not like you know it's not a little I can EA on there it's not an Activision there's no the big free to play so it's obviously supercell not obviously but supercell on there's inger on man you know these are the companies are making a lot of money on free to play mechanics actually no free play mechanics in this so I'm quite quickly fall away into these games which if you're into indie games which I'm not particularly an optically well verse Allah first some of these are pretty good seek you squash squash watch or whatever it's kind of it's been kind of banded around red cards fall especially really good but a lot of these are kind of coming from that kind of traditional indie [Music] developers got a small houses doing this very hot house style so assemble with care from us to that's one of the most most high-profile games I think a launch but that's kind of been hidden away really kind of interesting where the turtles from an illusion labs are pretty well-known indie Swedish indie you've
made a lot mobile games and pretty good relationship with Apple that's a bit hidden away as well so so you kind of have this problem where suddenly gold is you know is a good question what will you play first I'm not a politically helping me by having a look at new arrivals of this it doesn't make any sense because new arrivals everything's new arrival but we do have you know shin horn to which I thought would be able to important one for them sonic racing I haven't heard of Overland another thing is all these games kind of you know because they all paid games and actually a lot of them are kind of also PC actually some of them are on on PlayStation 4 as well but it looks a lot of his all kind of PC and a bit of switch stuff as well today selflessly the video deck so you see what's going on here then it's kind of bit odd quick tip data they dope eek game not paid at all neither speed but find a woman I mean it's kind of this tip stuff is a little bit odd given that um you know
it's good suppose I think it's just another ricotta discovery mechanic go somewhere wild leave the ordinary behind well I mean that means actually want a game day place and that's been game pretty heavily post which in imagine only on arcade though this is interesting because it's have a look so that's probably know so where cards fall is not only unlike aid what they mean is is the only this is the only mobile platform it's on so there is this idea of exclusivity on arcade whether it's forever or for timely exclusive and can't be on Android which obviously isn't a big play paid platform anyway but um where cars for always about cost full on other platforms even getting that long um I think carefully my I'm saying it but I say a lot these games are kind of cross-platform in the sense that they are on switch and other things afternoon if we're California's or not and we're here to help get hints so yeah adventure
for beginners multiplayer is interesting because one of the big ideas or one of the most talked about things about Apple arcade is it'll be pretty useful or people in the industry are saying I'm not really bothered in this this all game I quite like free to play which is my personal opinion I quite like free to play but people are saying I would for five dollars a month or five a month or five euros I suppose I would get this for my kids cuz it's keeping them out of the free to play store they get weird advertising and they might press them on button and get charged $100 or things so that you can kind of see why that would be the case it's interesting there's not being I would say this creation is not particularly child focused this is very much kind of adults and actually these games I mean it depends on the age of your children really but um these games are not for very small children these games you know probably you would say and I'm sure the capacity of eight-year-olds is incredible but these are probably more I mean you know kind
of aimed at teenage teenagers young teenagers ever think so we've got role-playing puzzle platformer and we Frogger there we have so multiplayer so it's interesting multiplayer we've got so those are not particularly high profile to Sonic racing is the interesting - did the multiplayer stuff and then wants to hit the bottom here see all games so will this be alphabetical released I'll skate city see that's not be mentioned before and that was kind of so how they actually nobody how they're all during these that's bit odd naughty very quickly I suppose we can only play one of these but to get these off so you're having it download that it's not a streaming service or anything like that mini motorways is something that people have been talking about so this is just
effectively go get like going through a normal app store install this one this would be quite big there no I'll speed up the process
okay so there we are ready to play well the game centers that little thing goodness me didn't you Oh what okay that's weird so I'm not gonna really play skating detail but obviously we can see here this is what we're gonna do we're going to be manipulating objects
with the aspect ratio in bay we're not doing that so there we go and that was just a brief kind of gets a first time user experience come on boarding - okay I think you know how you launch anything is pretty difficult and we got so many games that you know we can't go please everyone was I guess it would be more sensible not to have so many games to begin with then kind of drip feed them input them obviously I guess you want to go with the biggest impact that you can have so anyway Apple arcade $5.00 a month as a subscription service first month for free so I imagine that's worth everyone should cut checking out and seeing whether they think it'd be useful for them but anyway thanks for watching video so this is a Pocket Gamer doctors where we do videos occasionally about mobile games and yes so thanks for watching if you've got any comments stick them in the comments box and we'll hope to see you in soon
[Music] you
The launch of Apple Arcade represents a strategic shift in mobile gaming, introducing a subscription-based model that eliminates in-app purchases, microtransactions, and advertisements. Priced at $4.99 per month, the service provides an all-you-can-play library accessible across Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV, with cross-platform synchronization. The service launched with approximately 50 to 70 titles, emphasizing a curated experience that distinguishes itself from the traditional free-to-play mobile market.
The platform’s discovery mechanics rely on a dedicated tab within the App Store, featuring editorial curation and thematic collections. While the library includes high-profile titles from established developers like Sega, Capcom, and Konami, as well as notable indie projects, the sheer volume of content at launch presents a curation challenge. Many titles are either exclusive to the Apple ecosystem or represent mobile-first versions of existing PC and console games. Despite industry speculation that the service would primarily serve as a child-friendly alternative to the free-to-play market, the initial library appears geared toward a broader, more mature audience, with limited emphasis on content specifically designed for younger children.
Technically, the service functions through standard app downloads rather than cloud streaming, requiring users to manage local storage. The onboarding process is integrated into the existing iOS interface, though the initial user experience highlights potential friction in navigating such a large, diverse catalog. Ultimately, the service positions itself as a premium, ad-free environment, though its long-term success depends on its ability to effectively surface relevant content to users amidst a crowded and rapidly expanding library.
