Meta has initiated budget cuts and layoffs within Reality Labs.
The virtual reality gaming sector faces a critical decline as Meta significantly reduces its investment in the Reality Labs division. Following years of heavy subsidization and aggressive studio acquisitions, Meta has initiated a series of layoffs and studio closures, including the shuttering of Twisted Pixel Games, Sanzaru Games, and Armature Studio. These actions signal a strategic retreat from the metaverse ambitions that have served as the primary financial engine for the VR industry since 2020.
Market data indicates that the VR gaming ecosystem lacks sustainable commercial viability without Meta’s direct intervention. Analysis of 2025 sales figures reveals that paid VR titles struggle to gain traction, with most new releases selling only a few thousand units. The free-to-play model currently dominates the Quest platform, while the PlayStation VR2 market remains largely stagnant, with some titles recording fewer than 20,000 units sold. With third-party publishers largely uninterested and venture capital funding drying up, the industry is left with few alternatives to maintain development.
The current landscape suggests that the era of high-budget, Meta-funded VR gaming is effectively ending. While the medium has produced notable, critically acclaimed experiences, the lack of a broad consumer market and the high barriers to entry have rendered the sector unable to support itself. As Meta pivots its focus, the remaining VR development landscape is expected to shrink further, leaving only a handful of specialized studios to navigate an increasingly difficult economic environment.
