Africa Games Industry Report 2024

The African games industry is currently undergoing a transformative period of expansion, positioning itself as a significant emerging player within the $250 billion global market. Driven by a young, mobile-first demographic, the sector is characterized by a heavy reliance on mobile platforms, which account for 90 percent of regional revenue and serve 95 percent of the continent’s 186 million gamers. With total spending in Sub-Saharan Africa projected to reach $1 billion in 2024, the industry is leveraging its unique cultural identity and integration with broader creative arts to capture international attention and investment. The development landscape is geographically diverse, with West Africa leading in developer participation while Southern Africa maintains a concentration of established studios. Despite this momentum, the sector faces structural impediments that hinder widespread profitability. Currently, only 36 percent of developers generate consistent income, a statistic largely attributed to persistent challenges regarding power and internet infrastructure, limited government support, and restricted access to venture capital. These barriers underscore the necessity for a more robust ecosystem that bridges the gap between creative talent and commercial viability. To achieve long-term sustainability, the industry must transition from its current fragmented state toward a more integrated model supported by strategic partnerships and policy advocacy. Drawing parallels from successful emerging markets like Brazil and Turkey, the path forward requires collaborative interventions that prioritize infrastructure development, specialized educational initiatives, and improved financial accessibility. By fostering these foundational elements, African studios can better navigate global markets, ensuring that the continent’s burgeoning creative output translates into lasting economic growth and a permanent foothold in the international gaming ecosystem.

Annual Review 2022: Ukie

The UK games industry demonstrated significant economic resilience throughout 2022, achieving a record market valuation of £7.16 billion and contributing £5.26 billion in gross value added to the national economy. This performance occurred against a backdrop of broader economic instability and industry consolidation, yet the sector maintained robust growth through strategic advocacy, international trade initiatives, and a focus on long-term talent development. The ecosystem, which spans developers, publishers, educational institutions, and service providers, remains a vital pillar of the UK’s creative economy. Organizational efforts centered on navigating complex regulatory landscapes, including the Online Safety Bill and ongoing discussions regarding loot box legislation. Beyond policy, a primary objective involved addressing structural challenges such as the recruitment crisis and the lingering impacts of Brexit. To mitigate these pressures, industry initiatives prioritized diversity and inclusion, with the #RaiseTheGame pledge now encompassing half of the industry’s total headcount. Furthermore, the expansion of the Digital Schoolhouse network by 47% and the support of over 3,350 students underscore a commitment to building a sustainable pipeline of domestic talent. Sustainability and global connectivity also emerged as key operational pillars. The introduction of the Green Games Guide and the inaugural Green Games Summit signaled a shift toward environmental responsibility, while the hybrid London Games Festival facilitated essential international investment and networking. With a record membership of nearly 600 companies, the sector continues to leverage specialized groups focused on esports, equity, and policy to foster innovation. Moving forward, the industry remains focused on securing sustained investment and refining its infrastructure to ensure continued competitiveness in an evolving global market.

Swedish Games Industry: 2022

The Swedish games industry serves as a powerhouse of global digital entertainment, characterized by rapid expansion, aggressive international consolidation, and a highly specialized business model. By focusing on high-value creative and communicative processes—a strategy known as the "smiling curve"—Swedish firms have achieved significant commercial success, with an estimated one-in-four people globally having played a Swedish-developed title. As of 2022, the sector encompasses 832 companies and nearly 8,000 domestic employees, supported by a robust educational ecosystem and regional clusters that foster entrepreneurship across the country. Financial performance reached a peak in 2021, with domestic revenue climbing to €2.7 billion and global revenue hitting €5.8 billion. This growth was fueled by a surge in pandemic-era engagement and a high volume of strategic acquisitions led by major conglomerates such as Embracer Group and Stillfront Group. While these entities have expanded their footprint to 197 studios across 49 countries, the industry has recently navigated a market correction and valuation decline linked to broader macroeconomic shifts. Despite these financial fluctuations, the sector remains a dominant force, accounting for 6% of total global watch time on Twitch. Sustaining this momentum requires addressing systemic challenges, including a persistent skills shortage, recruitment difficulties, and a need for greater workforce diversity, where women currently represent 22.1% of the domestic staff. The industry is actively responding to these pressures by prioritizing inclusive work environments and adopting sustainability frameworks like the Green Games Guide to mitigate the environmental impact of digital distribution. By balancing aggressive M&A activity with a commitment to long-term talent development and sustainable practices, the Swedish games industry maintains its position as a resilient and influential leader in the global digital economy.

The Netherlands Games Monitor 2024

The Dutch games industry currently occupies a position of moderate capacity, characterized by a stable core of 614 companies and a total revenue of €763 million as of 2023. While the sector has demonstrated resilience against global economic headwinds, it is navigating a period of consolidation and cooling growth ambitions. Employment has seen a slight contraction to 4,291 jobs, reflecting a broader shift toward specialization and organic, self-funded development rather than rapid scaling. The industry remains heavily anchored in a premium, PC-first model, though developers are increasingly diversifying their technical toolsets and exploring emerging platforms to mitigate the risks of market saturation. Strategic challenges persist, particularly regarding the acquisition of risk capital and the competitive disadvantage posed by government support structures compared to neighboring European nations. These systemic hurdles, combined with high labor costs and a talent gap, have tempered the industry's desire to expand. Despite these obstacles, the applied games sector remains a robust pillar of the ecosystem, maintaining strong growth projections and leading the industry in the adoption of generative AI. While AI is widely utilized for pre-production and coding, developers remain cautious regarding its application in final assets due to ethical and copyright concerns. The industry is also undergoing a gradual demographic evolution, with steady improvements in gender and non-binary representation. However, sustainability initiatives have largely stalled as firms prioritize financial stability over environmental goals. Meanwhile, the educational pipeline is experiencing a decline in enrollment, though graduates are increasingly finding success in game-adjacent sectors that value technical expertise and game-design thinking. Ultimately, the Dutch games industry functions as a mature, specialized market that, while lacking the large-scale success stories required for explosive growth, continues to sustain a stable and creative professional landscape.

The Rise of Battle Royale: An Overview of the Hottest Game Genre

The battle royale genre has emerged as a dominant force in the global gaming industry, characterized by a unique blend of survival, exploration, and last-man-standing mechanics. By distilling core elements from survival and shooter games into a highly replayable, spectator-friendly format, the genre has achieved rapid mainstream adoption. This evolution mirrors the historical development of the MOBA genre, which similarly refined complex mechanics into a focused, competitive experience. The genre’s rise is anchored by two primary titles: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Fortnite. PUBG initially set the standard for PC success, quickly dethroning established titles on platforms like Steam and Twitch. However, Fortnite has since gained significant momentum, particularly in the West, by leveraging a free-to-play model, lower system requirements, and aggressive cross-platform integration. Data indicates that while PUBG maintains a strong foothold in Asian markets—supported by strategic partnerships with local publishers like Tencent—Fortnite has successfully captured a broader global audience through its accessibility and cultural impact. The industry is currently witnessing a rapid expansion into the mobile sector, driven by a mobile-first gaming culture in Asia and the subsequent global rollout of mobile-optimized versions of these titles. Publishers such as NetEase and Tencent have been instrumental in this transition, launching multiple mobile-specific iterations that have achieved massive download numbers. Looking forward, the genre is poised for further growth as developers integrate battle royale modes into existing triple-A franchises. While the inherent randomness of the format presents challenges for formalizing esports, the high viewership metrics suggest that competitive play and professional streaming will remain central to the genre's long-term sustainability and commercial success.

The Game Industry of Poland: Report 2025

The Polish video game and tabletop industry has matured into a globally integrated, export-driven powerhouse, serving as a cornerstone of the nation’s creative economy. With over 800 active producers and publishers, the sector generates €1,293 million in annual revenue, with 97% of production destined for international markets. This evolution from 1980s hobbyist roots to a sophisticated hub for AAA development, horror, and strategy titles underscores Poland’s strategic importance in the Central and Eastern European technology landscape. The industry is characterized by a robust ecosystem that balances large-scale developers like CD Projekt RED and People Can Fly with specialized service providers in quality assurance, motion capture, and localization. Despite this success, the sector is currently navigating a period of consolidation and market cooling. A significant wave of studio closures, affecting roughly one in four firms identified in previous years, reflects broader global economic volatility and a lack of sustained domestic government support. However, the industry remains resilient, pivoting toward diversification in AI dataset production, VR/XR development, and specialized B2B services. The tabletop segment mirrors this maturity, maintaining a stable valuation of 581.9 million PLN while achieving notable growth in niche card and adult-oriented categories. Polish publishers have also secured a dominant position in global crowdfunding, frequently leveraging narrative-driven, high-quality intellectual properties to attract international backers. Looking forward, the sector is shifting toward long-term sustainability through fiscal discipline and strategic infrastructure investments, such as the Katowice Gaming and Technology Hub. By integrating advanced tools like Unreal Engine 5 and photogrammetry, Polish studios continue to maintain a competitive edge in premium PC and console development. While the industry faces cyclical revenue challenges and undercapitalization, the influx of Asian investment and the continued professionalization of support organizations signal a cautious but optimistic trajectory for Poland’s role as a premier global gaming hub.

Mobile Matters: The Impact of Mobile Games for Europe

The European mobile games sector functions as a vital economic engine, generating €5.89 billion in Gross Value Added and sustaining over 63,000 full-time equivalent positions as of 2025. By prioritizing metrics such as employment and operational expenditure across 32 jurisdictions, the industry demonstrates a robust footprint that extends beyond simple revenue generation. This ecosystem, anchored by major creative and technical hubs in Sweden, Spain, and the United Kingdom, is projected to see its market value within the European Single Market climb to €6.13 billion by 2028. The industry’s primary thesis centers on the necessity of a balanced regulatory framework that protects consumers while fostering the continuous investment required for the free-to-play model. Because mobile gaming represents the most prevalent form of digital entertainment in Europe, companies must commit significant resources to live operations to remain competitive against escalating global development costs. This ongoing investment cycle is essential for maintaining Europe’s status as a premier hub for technological innovation, particularly in fields such as artificial intelligence and advanced digital skill development. Beyond its direct commercial contributions, the sector serves as a catalyst for broader societal progress. Mobile gaming platforms increasingly function as vehicles for social impact, facilitating initiatives ranging from environmental advocacy to medical research. To ensure the long-term sustainability of this growth, policymakers must cultivate an environment that encourages operational agility and technical advancement. By supporting the industry’s ability to innovate, Europe can secure its competitive position in the global digital economy while leveraging the unique reach of mobile gaming to address diverse societal challenges.

Game Developer Index: Sweden 2025

The Swedish games industry remains a cornerstone of the national economy, demonstrating significant resilience throughout 2024 despite a challenging global financial climate. With total domestic revenue reaching SEK 37 billion and global revenue climbing to nearly SEK 73 billion, the sector accounts for 3% of Sweden’s total service exports. The industry’s footprint is extensive, comprising 1,101 companies and employing over 9,000 domestic staff. While large corporations like Embracer Group, Stillfront, and Modern Times Group generate 90% of international net sales, the ecosystem is fundamentally entrepreneurial, with 93% of firms operating as small businesses with fewer than ten employees. The industry is currently navigating a period of structural adjustment characterized by corporate divestments, studio closures, and approximately 400 to 500 redundancies. Despite these pressures, the sector maintains a dominant global position, with Swedish-developed titles reaching an estimated one in four people worldwide. This success is supported by a robust infrastructure of regional incubators, academic partnerships, and vocational programs designed to address long-term skills shortages. However, the industry faces ongoing hurdles, including restricted access to capital, regulatory uncertainty regarding artificial intelligence, and a stagnation in gender diversity, with women currently representing 23.5% of the workforce. Looking forward, the Swedish games sector is prioritizing sustainability and digital safety, reporting a 14% reduction in emissions while actively researching the social benefits of gaming. By leveraging data from the Swedish Companies Registration Office and Statistics Sweden, the industry continues to professionalize its operations. Despite recent volatility and the complexities of a shifting global market, the Swedish gaming ecosystem remains a highly productive, innovative, and essential contributor to both the national economy and the international digital landscape.

Revenue & Top Companies: Romania 2025

The Romanian video game industry has demonstrated significant resilience and structural evolution, reaching a total revenue of 351 million EUR by 2025. While the sector experienced a post-pandemic contraction that impacted service providers, the market has pivoted toward a surge in creative output. This shift is evidenced by a 2.5-fold increase in game releases over the past two years, signaling a robust expansion within the independent development sector. The industry currently maintains a productivity rate of 57,200 EUR per specialist, supported by a workforce of 6,000 professionals. Geographically, the industry remains heavily concentrated in major urban hubs, with Bucharest serving as the primary center of operations, hosting 46 percent of all studios. Cluj, Iași, Timiș, and Brașov follow as secondary clusters, collectively accounting for 28 percent of the ecosystem. The current landscape comprises 234 active studios, ranging from multinational corporations to independent developers and service providers. Among the top 30 companies by turnover are major international players such as Electronic Arts Romania, Ubisoft, and Gameloft, alongside a diverse array of specialized local studios. The industry ecosystem is supported by a domestic player base of 8.6 million individuals. The transition from a service-heavy model to a more balanced mix of development and publishing has fostered a more sustainable environment for local talent. By diversifying its operational focus, the Romanian gaming sector has successfully navigated recent economic pressures, positioning itself as a key European hub for both large-scale multinational production and agile, independent game creation.

Libro Blanco del Desarrollo Español de Videojuegos 2025

The Spanish video game industry stands at a critical juncture, characterized by resilience and creative output despite a global climate of economic instability. As of 2024, the sector generated €1,464 million in turnover and sustained over 10,500 direct jobs, with Catalonia and Madrid serving as the primary hubs for development. While the industry maintains a stable core—with 72% of studios operating for over five years—it faces a notable slowdown in growth. Currently, 820 active studios operate within the country, yet approximately 200 of these entities remain at risk of closure due to project cancellations and workforce reductions, reflecting a broader vulnerability to international market volatility. Structural challenges persist, particularly regarding the industry's reliance on self-financing and self-publishing models. Most studios operate on a small scale, often managing only one project at a time, which complicates the transition toward complex "games as a service" models. While 53% of companies have begun integrating generative artificial intelligence into their workflows, adoption remains cautious and technically experimental. Furthermore, the industry continues to depend heavily on international sales, which account for 52% of revenue, highlighting a need for stronger domestic investment ecosystems and more robust collaboration with international platforms to retain intellectual property within Spain. To ensure long-term competitiveness, the sector requires a strategic shift toward institutional support. Key priorities include the implementation of targeted tax incentives, the consolidation of public funding, and improved professional training programs to address the persistent shortage of experienced talent in programming and design. By fostering a more sustainable financial environment and bridging the gap between small-scale production and global market demands, the industry aims to transition from a fragmented landscape of small studios to a more scalable, technologically advanced, and strategically recognized pillar of the Spanish economy.

Cyprus Video Game Industry Report 2025

Cyprus has emerged as the world’s most efficient video game development ecosystem, functioning as a critical hub within the $263.7 billion global gaming market. By 2025, the island’s industry comprised over 400 companies and a workforce exceeding 4,300 employees, contributing approximately €1.15 billion directly to the national GDP. This rapid expansion, which saw the number of firms more than double between 2019 and 2024, is underpinned by a mobile-first strategy, a favorable IP Box tax regime, and a high concentration of mobile game installs per capita. Despite its small population, Cyprus ranks third globally in mobile downloads and eleventh in mobile in-app revenue, reflecting a mature, export-oriented sector. The ecosystem’s financial health is characterized by significant capital activity, including €2.76 billion in M&A and €137 million in equity funding between 2020 and 2025. A unique feature of this landscape is the prevalence of user-acquisition financing, which provided €128.3 million in non-dilutive capital in 2025, allowing studios to maintain agility. Furthermore, Cyprus-based developers are at the forefront of the industry-wide shift toward direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales models. By bypassing traditional platform fees and securing direct access to player data, these studios have gained a distinct competitive advantage in an increasingly saturated global market that now prioritizes profitability and player relationship management over rapid, unchecked expansion. Despite these successes, the industry faces structural challenges regarding long-term sustainability. While the tax framework is highly competitive for established studios, there is a notable deficit in dedicated early-stage grants and seed funding for startups. Additionally, the talent pipeline remains a bottleneck; although the nation hosts a large student population, the annual output of graduates specifically trained for game development is insufficient to meet current demand. Future growth will depend on closing these funding and educational gaps, as exemplified by upcoming initiatives like the 2026 Plug&Play accelerator, which aim to solidify Cyprus’s position as a premier global gaming destination.
