You and Me, We Got This!: Exploring the Relationship Between Cooperative and Competitive Presence in League of Legends
Key insights
6 takeaways- 01There is a consistent, moderate positive relationship between copresence (awareness of teammates) and compresence (awareness of opponents) in team-based games like League of Legends.See it on page 13
- 02The relationship between copresence and compresence remains robust and statistically significant regardless of other player experience factors, such as match outcome or whether players are friends or strangers.See it on page 23
- 03Meaning and challenge act as covariates in the relationship between copresence and compresence, but they are not strong enough to moderate or negate the core connection between these two types of social presence.See it on page 17
- 04Prior knowledge of teammates does not moderate the relationship between copresence and compresence, nor does it result in significantly different scores for either type of presence compared to playing with strangers.See it on page 13
- 05Because copresence and compresence are intrinsically linked, negative social behaviors like flaming—which disrupt one form of presence—are likely to cause a simultaneous breakdown in the other.See it on page 6
- 06Researchers and developers should measure both copresence and compresence simultaneously to gain an accurate understanding of player experience, as focusing on only one provides an incomplete picture of social dynamics.See it on page 22
