The Game Business
Ball will address significant pressures within the console business, specifically rising memory and storage costs.
Xbox has initiated a significant restructuring of its leadership team to accelerate product development and refine its business strategy. Under the direction of CEO Asha Sharma, the company has appointed two high-profile industry figures to key executive roles. Matthew Ball, a prominent industry analyst and author, has been named Chief Strategy Officer, while Scott Van Vliet, a veteran with extensive experience in cloud infrastructure and gaming, has been appointed Chief Technology Officer.
These appointments are designed to address mounting pressures within the console hardware market, specifically regarding the rising costs of memory and storage components. Ball, who previously served as head of strategy and planning for Amazon Studios, is expected to leverage his analytical expertise to stabilize and strengthen the company's console division. Van Vliet, whose background includes leadership roles at Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI and Amazon’s gaming divisions, is tasked with optimizing internal product development processes to improve operational speed and output quality.
In addition to these executive hires, the company has promoted Chris Schnakenberg to Corporate Vice President of Partnerships and Business Development. Formerly a Vice President within the same department, Schnakenberg will focus on managing relationships with third-party publishers and developers. These leadership changes follow a broader series of organizational adjustments, including the appointment of Jason Ronald to oversee the upcoming Project Helix console. Collectively, these moves represent a strategic effort to clarify organizational goals and improve execution as the company prepares for future product showcases.
