Create free accounthi i'm john jordan from pocketgamer.biz and this is a brief introduction of what our monetizer feature is all about so monetizer came about when i was giving a couple of talks at speeches this year i was trying to think about how you could come up with a kind of quick and uh dirty way of analyzing free to play games particularly in terms of how they try to monetize their audiences so this is a um kind of a i call it a work in progress it's a it's a process not a destination definitely a process so every week i'm playing the first five to ten minutes of free to play games and videoing it and just looking to see kind of how the game tries to interact with the player what it asks it the player to do does it ask us to connect to facebook to ask us to spend money straight early on in the game um so that's the kind of the the idea and every week we'll be uh running columns on pocketgame.cs with numbers attached to them so it's very important um even though it's a process that we need numbers attached to our monetizer
concept so in that we have a kind of a number to measure the success of the game because obviously that's the that's the end point so we've mentioned prime measures success in terms of how top grossing a game is um and we also look and we have this kind of ranking i call the monetizer ranking and it's a number 50 out of about 500 um and we look to see where kind of games rank and it's all the reason we do that so we can rank games against each other it's not science at all but it's um we're trying to come up with something that is sufficiently robust that we can take any game and get an idea of of how um highly monetizing or how highly when monetization are compared to other games so uh yeah keep reading the monetizer column thanks
The Monetizer initiative provides a structured framework for analyzing the monetization strategies of free-to-play mobile games. By evaluating the initial five to ten minutes of gameplay, the project aims to identify how developers introduce engagement mechanics, social connectivity requirements, and early-stage spending prompts to their audiences. This approach serves as a diagnostic tool to assess how effectively titles integrate revenue-generating features into the user experience from the moment of installation.
The methodology relies on a consistent, repeatable process that assigns a quantitative value to each game, known as the Monetizer ranking. This metric is derived from a scale of 50 points, which allows for comparative analysis across a broad spectrum of approximately 500 titles. By correlating these rankings with top-grossing performance data, the analysis seeks to establish a robust benchmark for evaluating the commercial viability of various design choices. While the ranking system is acknowledged as an evolving process rather than a rigid scientific standard, it provides a standardized way to measure and compare the aggressive or subtle monetization tactics employed by different developers.
Ultimately, the project functions as a recurring industry column designed to offer actionable insights into the competitive landscape of mobile gaming. By focusing on the critical first minutes of interaction, the analysis highlights the tension between player retention and immediate revenue conversion. This ongoing assessment provides developers and industry observers with a clear, data-driven perspective on how successful games balance user acquisition with long-term financial performance.
