How To Market A Game
Out of 13,834 indie and AA games released, only 354 reached 1,000 or more reviews within their launch year.
This analysis examines the performance of indie and AA games released on Steam during 2023, specifically focusing on titles that achieved significant commercial traction. By benchmarking games that secured 1,000 or more reviews within their launch year, the study aims to identify market trends and determine the viability of various genres for independent developers. The methodology relies on data sourced from VGInsights, involving a manual classification of 354 successful titles after filtering out games with major intellectual property ties or those primarily localized for specific non-English markets.
The findings indicate that while 13,834 indie and AA games were released in 2023, only 2.55% reached the 1,000-review threshold. Despite the high volume of total releases, 2023 outperformed 2022 in terms of top-tier success, with 17 more games reaching the 1,000-review milestone compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the total volume of reviews for these top-tier games increased significantly, suggesting that successful titles are capturing a larger share of player attention. Horror, survival, and simulation emerged as the most successful genres, while roguelike deckbuilders demonstrated a high percentage of success relative to their total release count.
The analysis concludes that the Steam marketplace is increasingly characterized by a "winner-take-all" dynamic. While the platform continues to provide opportunities for indie developers to achieve substantial revenue—occasionally outperforming AAA titles—the market is polarizing. A growing number of low-performing games with fewer than 10 reviews occupy the bottom of the market, while the "top tier" of successful games commands a larger portion of total revenue. Ultimately, the data suggests that while the barrier to entry remains low, the competition for visibility is intensifying, necessitating a strategic approach to genre selection and marketing to avoid being marginalized in an increasingly crowded ecosystem.
