The Candy Crush franchise has achieved a significant financial milestone, surpassing $20 billion in lifetime revenue since its initial launch in April 2012. This figure encompasses the entire franchise, including titles such as Candy Crush Soda Saga, Candy Crush Jelly Saga, and Candy Crush Friends Saga, across all major platforms including iOS, Android, Windows, and Facebook. In addition to its revenue success, the franchise has recorded 5 billion lifetime downloads, maintaining its position as the top-grossing mobile franchise in United States app stores for six consecutive years.
King attributes this sustained performance to a strategy of continuous development and long-term support, which has allowed the studio to keep aging titles relevant for over a decade. Despite this success, the company maintains a cautious approach toward new product launches, noting that the competitive landscape has raised the barrier to entry significantly. This difficulty is underscored by the studio's recent history of discontinuing underperforming titles, such as Crash Bandicoot: On the Run, which failed to sustain its initial momentum.
The franchise remains a critical component of the Activision Blizzard King portfolio, contributing $747 million in net revenue during the second quarter of 2023 alone, representing 33% of the parent company's total revenue for that period. With 238 million monthly active users, the Candy Crush brand serves as a primary driver for Microsoft’s strategic interest in acquiring Activision Blizzard, as the integration of such high-performing mobile assets is projected to increase Microsoft’s share of global mobile gaming revenue from 0.3% to over 4%.
