Unity’s financial results for the second quarter of 2022 reveal a period of significant revenue growth coupled with a substantial increase in net losses. The company reported total revenue of $297 million, a 9% increase year-over-year. However, this growth was overshadowed by a net loss of $204.15 million, which represents 68.7% of the company’s total quarterly revenue and marks a 37.6% increase in losses compared to the same period in the previous year.
The performance across Unity’s business divisions was mixed. The Create Solutions division, which encompasses the company’s core engine technology, served as the primary driver of growth, with revenue rising 66% to $120.9 million. Notably, 40% of this division's revenue originated from sectors outside of video games. Conversely, the Operate Solutions and Strategic Partnership divisions experienced declines, with revenues falling 13% to $158.5 million and 2% to $17.7 million, respectively.
Beyond these financial metrics, the company is navigating significant strategic shifts. Unity announced a new $1 billion joint venture in China, partnering with major local entities such as Alibaba and China Mobile to expand its regional footprint. Furthermore, the company is currently evaluating its corporate structure amidst acquisition interest. While management confirmed receipt of a merger proposal from AppLovin, they declined to provide specific commentary, focusing instead on a previously announced merger with ironSource. This ongoing deal, which aims to balance the company’s revenue mix between creation and growth services, remains a central point of interest for stakeholders as the company balances its expansion efforts against its current operational deficits.
