This analysis explores the primary motivations of board gamers, utilizing data from over 90,000 respondents who completed a standardized motivation profile survey. The research identifies 11 distinct motivational clusters—such as Need to Win, Discovery, Social Fun, and Accessibility—to understand what drives engagement within the tabletop gaming hobby. By segmenting these findings by gender, age, and engagement level, the study provides a nuanced look at how different demographics interact with board games.
Key findings reveal significant differences in primary motivations across gender lines. For men, the most common motivations are the Need to Win and Discovery. In contrast, women are more likely to prioritize Accessibility and Social Fun, suggesting that female gamers often view board games as social catalysts. While men are 3.5 times more likely than women to cite Conflict as a primary motivation, both genders report a similar interest in the Need to Win, indicating that the desire for competitive success is broadly shared.
Age also influences gaming preferences, with younger players (ages 13–25) favoring mechanics that facilitate winning and ease of entry, while older players (ages 36+) gravitate toward Discovery and Accessibility. Notably, the analysis concludes that gender accounts for more than three times the variance in gaming motivations compared to age, challenging the assumption that age is the primary driver of behavioral differences. Furthermore, a subset of highly engaged players—identified through BoardGameGeek membership—demonstrates distinct motivational priorities, such as a higher interest in strategy and aesthetics, compared to the broader, more casual survey population.
