The global games market is positioned as a rapidly expanding sector, with Newzoo projecting growth from USD151.9 billion in 2019 to roughly USD180.1 billion in 2021. Gaming has moved from PCs and mobile into consoles and virtual reality, and has spawned eSports, whose global revenue was expected to reach USD1.5 billion by 2020. The Asia-Pacific region accounted for 51 per cent of global eSports enthusiasts in 2017, underscoring the region's weight in the segment.
Malaysia's gaming industry is presented as a growing contributor to the national economy and a priority within the country's creative sector. The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia classifies gaming, under Film/TV/Gaming Content, as one of ten creative industry categories. In 2018 the industry contributed USD100 million to revenue, with a projected CAGR of 10.9 per cent from 2018 to 2023, reaching a market volume of USD168 million by 2023. Malaysia ranks 21st worldwide in games revenue, at USD633 million.
Talent and company development receive attention as supporting factors. Local institutions such as Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, and Management and Science University offer game design, art, and programming courses. PassionRepublic, a Malaysian animation studio with over 95 employees, has produced content for Sony, Microsoft Games, Warner, and Square Enix, and plans to expand its studio and R&D capabilities with MIDA's support.
Government and institutional backing is a central theme. The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation has hosted LEVEL UP KL, a Southeast Asian games industry event, annually since 2015, attracting firms such as Sony Interactive Entertainment, Epic Games, Google, Bandai Namco, and Microsoft XBOX. Budget 2019 allocated RM10 million to eSports development, and the Youth and Sports Ministry aims to make Malaysia a regional eSports hub, with Esports Malaysia reformed as the governing body. MIDA commits to helping local gaming companies grow into regional and global players.
