Create free accountokay here we are in sunny barcelona but what are you what are you who are you and what are you up to uh i'm emeritus from the game bakers a small indie french studio and we've made the games like squids and squids wireless who released on ios and android and now i'm in barcelona to to show my new game okay can you tell us a bit about the uh your new game yeah sure it's called combo crew okay and uh in short it's a bit like street fighter meets fruit ninja okay so it's a first beat them up made for a mobile device with the tactile controls because obviously that's for beating up kind of fans that's the whole thing is all the kind of combo moves and all that kind of thing so how are you how are you dealing with that with a touchscreen yeah sure combos i mean it's in the title so it's very important to us as well uh we've worked a lot on uh trying to give a gameplay that is very easy to to pick up and play for uh for short sessions like it's something that we really like to to play on mobile but as
well we wanted to have a good depleted gameplay depth so it's all about improving yourself to uh pull out the good combos not break your combo streak increase your score and beat your friends uh at it i know moves are a big big part of the game so can you yeah are you kind of the moves work and how cause you can't you only get four moves yeah actually that's that's a big big point of the field of view of the game it's not uh about remembering all the combos the 100 combos moves like up up down up down left it's not about that at all you have a lot of moves but you only have four controls so you swipe up down left or right and it will trigger a special move that you have selected from a list so there is a kind of tactical strategy thing that you choose your play style if you are more like a fighter
a zombie type of guy in street fighter like okay i want this kind of power maybe slower but stronger so you can set up your character this way if you are more like a fast many hits combo person you can also choose that and you just have four slots to choose so there is a bit of a gambling or a tactical uh strategy the other thing is the other thing you're saying what an answer we have to speak up so you're talking about you've got some uh interesting kind of online kind of uh kind of absolutely absolutely yeah that's super important for us because it was that kind of feeling that we had 10 15 years ago when you would invite a friend at home to play a final fight streets of rage beat them up and just try to beat the game together and now it's a bit missing with the mobile platforms because it's obviously hard to play a two on the same device so uh there is something else that is great that comes with that is the fact
that you can play with asynchronous gameplay so you've had a lot of fun with draw something with words with friends or games like that we're friends but beat them yeah we all we uh we started calling the game fight something but we preferred combo crew in the end so that's that's the the concept when you fail in the game you can call your friend it will come in your game while you rest beat your level and then give you give you back some life so that you can continue and together reach the top of the tower sounds great so when should we be expecting uh the game and what platforms are you eating uh we are uh expecting to release it end of april uh we will give more news uh starting next week so that's like the first interview that i do and we will be releasing it on ios and android and all players will be able to play together whatever the the platform great thanks very much thank you very much
Combo Crew represents a strategic effort by the French indie studio The Game Bakers to adapt the traditional beat-'em-up genre for mobile devices. By blending the high-intensity combat of classic arcade titles with the intuitive, swipe-based mechanics popularized by casual mobile games, the project aims to bridge the gap between deep, skill-based gameplay and the accessibility required for short, on-the-go play sessions. The core design philosophy prioritizes fluid, touch-based controls over complex button combinations, allowing players to execute diverse maneuvers through a simplified four-directional swipe system.
The gameplay emphasizes tactical customization, requiring players to select specific move sets that define their combat style, whether they prefer high-speed, multi-hit combos or slower, high-damage strikes. This strategic layer is complemented by a focus on score-chasing and maintaining combo streaks, which serves as the primary driver for player progression and social competition. By moving away from the traditional requirement of memorizing long strings of inputs, the game lowers the barrier to entry while maintaining a high skill ceiling for those seeking mastery.
A significant component of the experience is its asynchronous multiplayer functionality, designed to replicate the cooperative spirit of classic couch co-op beat-'em-ups like Streets of Rage. Players can assist friends by jumping into their games to clear difficult levels and restore health, fostering a collaborative environment despite the limitations of mobile hardware. Scheduled for a simultaneous release on iOS and Android, the game features cross-platform play to ensure a unified community. This approach reflects a broader industry trend of integrating social, asynchronous mechanics into traditionally solitary mobile genres to increase engagement and retention.
