This feature is frequently implemented in successful MD3 titles in the US iOS market.
Multi-dimensional match 3 games (MD3s), which fuse match 3 puzzle mechanics with RPG progression, are examined in this final installment of a three-part series on the genre. The central thesis is that MD3s can capture both casual and mid-/hardcore audiences, but only if developers deliberately decide the game's primary focus and keep every feature aligned with it. Without that clarity, a title risks appealing to neither side of the casual-hardcore spectrum.
The first design decision is whether the game leans toward match 3 (Best Fiends, Angry Birds Fight) or toward character development and team optimization (Puzzle & Dragons, Marvel War of Heroes). Misalignment is costly: an RPG-heavy MD3 whose battles are dominated by match 3 randomness makes player investment in gear feel meaningless, producing frustration and weak retention.
Three features are identified, based on US iOS top grossing chart data and statistical modeling, as boosting commercial potential. Special levels and modes with unique mechanics, such as Puzzle & Dragons' special dungeons, add variety and non-linear progression. A dynamic item or character pool, with rotating shop inventory or randomized purchases as in Heroes Charge, drives re-engagement and in-app purchase frequency, and appears more often among top grossing titles than average ones. Rich social features, whose importance in the US market rose sharply over the prior year, work best when cooperative elements, such as borrowing friends' or guildmates' characters, support PvP. Active, dynamic PvP leagues, with ladder climbing and periodic new events, are singled out as the strongest PvP feature, with Marvel Puzzle Quest and Angry Birds Fight cited as examples.
Published in July 2015, the analysis focuses on the US iOS market and offers qualitative, feature-level guidance rather than detailed figures.
