The Southern University Law Center (SULC) has partnered with the esports platform Vanta to launch the SULC Louisiana Esports League, a statewide initiative designed to foster competitive gaming and educational opportunities for middle and high school students. By providing free access to the league, the partnership aims to build a robust scholastic esports ecosystem in Louisiana, offering students exposure to game design, cybersecurity, and broader STEM-related career paths.
The league features multiple tiered tournaments across various titles, including Fortnite, League of Legends, Tetris, and Super Smash Bros. Participation is open to public, private, and charter schools, as well as homeschooled students throughout the state. The inaugural season includes a pre-season starting January 22, 2024, followed by a regular season beginning February 5. The top four teams in each game category will advance to an in-person championship tournament held at the SULC Mixed Reality Virtual Innovation Gaming and Esports Institute on April 27–28, 2024.
Vanta, a for-profit company founded in 2020, specializes in operating scholastic esports leagues that prioritize safe, inclusive, and COPPA-compliant environments. The company has secured over $3.3 million in disclosed funding to date and maintains a portfolio of partnerships with various educational associations and school districts across the United States. This collaboration with SULC aligns with broader state-level efforts to enhance computer science skills and innovation among Louisiana’s youth, who represent a K-12 student population of approximately 775,583. While financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, the initiative serves as a strategic effort to integrate competitive gaming into the state's educational framework.
