The technology is poised to become an established segment, driving future growth and enabling new gaming concepts.
Virtual reality (VR) technology represents a significant emerging trend within the German gaming market, characterized by strong consumer interest despite the limited availability of hardware at the time of the analysis. The primary thesis posits that VR headsets are poised to become an established segment of the gaming industry, serving as a catalyst for future market growth and the development of innovative, immersive gaming concepts.
Data from a representative survey of 1,004 German internet users aged 14 and older indicates that 35 percent of respondents intend to use VR headsets for gaming in the future. This interest is notably higher among younger demographics, with 62 percent of 14- to 19-year-olds and 46 percent of 20- to 29-year-olds expressing a desire to adopt the technology. Curiosity extends across all age groups, including 38 percent of 30- to 39-year-olds, 37 percent of 40- to 49-year-olds, and 20 percent of users aged 50 and older.
The findings, published in July 2015, highlight that this enthusiasm is largely driven by positive testimonials regarding the immersive potential of the technology. Beyond gaming, the industry anticipates that VR will have broader applications in entertainment, such as 360-degree interactive film experiences and the remote participation in live events like concerts and sports. The research underscores the strategic importance of VR as a featured theme at the 2015 gamescom event in Cologne, where major hardware models were showcased to demonstrate the technology's potential to redefine digital entertainment.
