Savvy Games Group will oversee both current holdings and future investments.
Key change. Saudi Arabia's PIF will transfer its entire portfolio of video game and esports investments to its subsidiary, Savvy Games Group, by early 2025.
The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) is consolidating its gaming and esports assets by transferring its existing portfolio of industry investments to its wholly owned subsidiary, Savvy Games Group. Scheduled for completion in early 2025, this strategic shift centralizes the government’s gaming interests, positioning Savvy Games Group as the primary entity responsible for overseeing both current holdings and future investments within the sector.
The portfolio being transferred includes significant stakes in major international companies, such as an 8.6% share in Nintendo, a 6.6% stake in Capcom, and a controlling interest in SNK. Additionally, the PIF holds minority positions in various global publishers, including Microsoft, Take-Two Interactive, and Electronic Arts. Savvy Games Group, which already manages assets like the ESL FACEIT Group and mobile developer Scopely, aims to use this consolidation to deepen ties with Japanese publishers and drive the localization of intellectual property for the underserved Middle Eastern market.
These moves are central to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative, which seeks to diversify the national economy away from oil dependency by fostering growth in technology, entertainment, and tourism. While the government emphasizes job creation and economic expansion, the aggressive investment strategy has drawn scrutiny from critics who view the state’s involvement in global gaming as an attempt to improve its international reputation amid ongoing human rights concerns. By centralizing these assets, the government intends to streamline its influence and operational capacity within the global gaming and esports landscape.
