Modern Times Group
Modern Times Group concluded the 2020 fiscal year with record financial results and significant strategic expansion within its gaming and esports verticals. The fourth quarter was defined by a shift toward aggressive mergers and acquisitions, most notably the formation of a dedicated gaming holding company, GamingCo, and the acquisition of Hutch. These moves were supported by a successful, oversubscribed rights issue that generated 2,549 million SEK, providing the necessary capital to fuel future growth and repay bridge financing.
The gaming vertical achieved record annual net sales and adjusted EBITDA, bolstered by strong performance from InnoGames and increased user engagement. Despite a sequential decline in average revenue per daily active user due to seasonal campaign patterns, the segment remains a core growth engine, with five new titles planned for soft launch in 2021. Conversely, the esports vertical faced a challenging year but reached a critical milestone in the fourth quarter by delivering a positive adjusted EBITDA for the first time. This turnaround was driven by a concentrated schedule of online master-level events, which helped offset the absence of traditional live-audience tournaments.
Consolidated group net sales for the quarter declined by 9 percent, with organic net sales decreasing by 3 percent. However, the group’s adjusted EBITDA margin improved significantly to 18 percent, up from 7 percent in the same period the previous year. Looking ahead, the organization is focused on balancing its diversified gaming portfolio—ranging from early-growth titles to established revenue generators—while navigating the ongoing uncertainty of the pandemic as it prepares for a potential return to live esports events in the second half of 2021.
