Riot Reveals Changes to LoL Esports European Regional Leagues in 2025

Riot Games is implementing significant structural changes to the League of Legends European Regional Leagues (ERLs) for the 2025 season. The primary objective of these updates is to provide tournament organizers with greater operational flexibility and autonomy, allowing them to better tailor competition formats and broadcast experiences to their specific regional communities.

Key regulatory adjustments include the removal of mandatory substitute requirements, with teams now permitted to utilize emergency substitutes subject to organizer approval. Furthermore, the mandate for hosting in-person live events has been rescinded, enabling organizers to optimize resources between studio and remote production environments. Broadcasting rules have also been relaxed, granting organizers the discretion to determine which matches are aired and providing broader permissions for team-led co-streaming, including first-person view options.

Regarding talent development and competitive structure, organizers gain the authority to increase the number of locally trained representatives (LTRs) to foster regional talent growth. Additionally, restrictions on player and team participation in third-party events have been loosened. While the specific requirement for a second division has been removed, the promotion-relegation system remains a mandatory component of the competitive season. These changes reflect a broader strategic shift toward decentralizing ERL operations to enhance fan engagement and regional sustainability across the European esports ecosystem. Further details regarding Tier 2 format adjustments in the EMEA region are expected to be released in the near future.
