Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported financial results for the six-month period ending September 30, 2021, reflecting a period of year-over-year decline in net sales and operating income. Consolidated net sales reached 168.9 billion yen, down from 172.7 billion yen in the same period of the previous fiscal year, while operating income decreased to 29.1 billion yen from 31.6 billion yen. These results were primarily driven by a challenging comparison in the Digital Entertainment segment, which faced a difficult year-over-year benchmark due to the absence of major HD game releases comparable to the previous year’s launch of Final Fantasy VII Remake.
The Digital Entertainment segment, the company's largest revenue driver, saw net sales fall to 129.4 billion yen. While the MMORPG sub-segment performed well, bolstered by a sharp increase in monthly paying subscribers for Final Fantasy XIV, the Games for Smart Devices and PC Browser sub-segment experienced lackluster performance from existing titles. Conversely, the Amusement segment showed recovery, returning to profitability as the impact of pandemic-related arcade closures subsided. The Publication and Merchandising segments both reported growth, with Publication benefiting from strong digital and print sales, and Merchandising driven by high demand for character-based products.
Strategic initiatives for the period focused on expanding the company’s intellectual property ecosystem and exploring emerging technologies. Square Enix successfully completed a proof-of-concept phase for NFT digital cards using the Million Arthur franchise and signaled a strategic shift toward the development of decentralized blockchain games. The company intends to leverage token economies to evolve its content creation model, aiming to cater to increasingly diverse player incentives that extend beyond traditional gameplay to include interaction, creation, and collection.
