Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported its financial results for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2023, reflecting a mixed performance characterized by modest top-line growth alongside a decline in profitability. Consolidated net sales reached 257.6 billion yen, a slight increase from the 255.6 billion yen recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal year. However, operating income fell to 34.9 billion yen from 41.3 billion yen, and profit attributable to owners of the parent dropped significantly to 26.7 billion yen from 46.3 billion yen.
The Digital Entertainment segment, the company’s primary revenue driver, faced headwinds despite the release of major titles such as Final Fantasy XVI. Segment net sales declined to 179.6 billion yen, and operating income fell to 30.7 billion yen. This downturn was attributed to weaker-than-expected performance in existing mobile and browser-based games, as well as increased amortization of development costs and higher advertising expenditures. While total unit sales for HD and MMO games rose to 18.51 million units—driven largely by growth in digital downloads across North America, Europe, and Asia—these gains were insufficient to offset the rising costs and the underperformance of the mobile portfolio.
In contrast, other business segments demonstrated resilience. The Amusement segment saw net sales rise to 44.8 billion yen, supported by an increase in same-store sales. The Publication segment also reported growth, with net sales reaching 22.7 billion yen, bolstered by both print and digital sales following the successful launch of The Apothecary Diaries anime series. Similarly, the Merchandising segment experienced an uptick in performance, with net sales rising to 12.4 billion yen due to strong demand for character goods featuring core intellectual properties. The company maintains a cautious outlook, emphasizing that future results remain subject to market competition, currency fluctuations, and shifting consumer preferences.
