Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported financial results for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, revealing a period of high revenue but diminished profitability. The company recorded net sales of ¥172.0 billion, an increase of ¥8.7 billion year-over-year, yet operating income fell to ¥17.3 billion, a decline of ¥8.7 billion. This profit contraction was primarily driven by increased development cost amortization, higher advertising expenses, and a year-over-year decline in foreign exchange gains compared to the previous period, which had benefited from the divestiture of overseas studios.
The Digital Entertainment segment, the company’s primary revenue driver, posted net sales of ¥122.0 billion. While the HD Games sub-segment saw growth from the release of major titles like Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, the MMO sub-segment experienced a cyclical lull following previous years of high performance. Simultaneously, the Games for Smart Devices/PC Browser sub-segment reached a three-year low in net sales, as new releases failed to offset the declining performance of existing titles. Conversely, the Amusement segment showed consistent growth in both sales and operating income, while the Publication and Merchandising segments remained relatively stable.
Management identified a need to pivot toward a more market-oriented development strategy to address current inefficiencies. Key challenges include an over-reliance on specific genres and a fragmented title portfolio that lacks focus. To improve future profitability, the company plans to streamline its development pipeline, strengthen internal production capabilities, and enhance marketing functions. These strategic shifts, along with potential cross-media adaptations of core intellectual properties, will be formalized in the upcoming medium-term business plan scheduled for release in May 2024.
