Square Enix Holdings
The financial results for the six-month period ending September 30, 2023, provide a comprehensive overview of Square Enix Holdings’ performance across its primary business segments. The report outlines a period of mixed financial outcomes characterized by an increase in net sales to 172.0 billion yen, up from 163.3 billion yen in the previous year. Despite this top-line growth, the company experienced a decline in profitability, with operating income falling to 17.3 billion yen from 26.0 billion yen, and profit attributable to owners of the parent dropping to 16.6 billion yen from 39.4 billion yen.
The Digital Entertainment segment, which serves as the company’s primary revenue driver, saw net sales rise to 122.0 billion yen, bolstered by the release of major titles such as Final Fantasy XVI. However, operating income within this segment decreased significantly due to elevated development cost amortization and increased advertising expenditures. While unit sales for HD games grew globally—reaching 12.17 million units compared to 9.41 million in the prior year—the performance of games for smart devices and PC browsers remained weak, failing to offset the rising costs associated with new releases.
Other segments showed varied results: the Amusement business reported growth in both net sales and operating income, driven by an increase in same-store sales, while the Publication segment experienced a slight decline in both metrics. The Merchandising segment performed well, with gains in both sales and income attributed to strong demand for character merchandise featuring key intellectual properties.
Following management changes in June 2023, the company has initiated a strategic review to address these financial challenges. Key priorities include enhancing overall profitability, diversifying earnings sources, and optimizing capital allocation. A new medium-term business plan, intended to outline specific growth and efficiency strategies, is scheduled for release in May 2024. The company continues to operate under the Japanese generally accepted accounting principles, maintaining a focus on balancing long-term growth with capital efficiency.
