Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported its financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, reflecting a period of increased net sales but decreased operating and net income compared to the same period in the previous year. For the three-month period ended June 30, 2023, consolidated net sales reached 85.6 billion yen, an increase of 10.8 billion yen year-over-year. However, operating income fell significantly to 3.0 billion yen, down from 14.4 billion yen in the prior year, resulting in an operating income margin of 3.6 percent.
The Digital Entertainment segment, the company’s primary revenue driver, saw net sales rise to 62.3 billion yen, fueled by the launch of major titles such as Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. Despite this top-line growth, segment operating income declined to 2.7 billion yen, largely attributed to the amortization of development costs for new releases and weaker performance in existing smart device and PC browser games. Total unit sales for the segment reached 7.54 million units, with North America and Europe accounting for the largest share of distribution.
Other business segments showed mixed results. The Amusement segment performed well, with net sales and operating income increasing due to higher same-store sales. Conversely, the Publication segment experienced a decline in both net sales and operating income as both digital and print sales softened. The Merchandising segment reported growth, driven by strong demand for character goods featuring key intellectual properties. The company maintains a cautious outlook, noting that financial performance remains subject to fluctuations in economic conditions, currency exchange rates, and evolving consumer preferences in the highly competitive global gaming market.
