Unity Considering Sale of Chinese Division and Office Closures in France

Unity is reportedly weighing a sale of its Chinese subsidiary, Unity China, and preparing to shut down its operations in France, according to March 2026 media reports. Bloomberg says the company has explored multiple options for the unit, including a sale, and has already consulted advisors to gauge market interest. Sources cited by Bloomberg suggest Unity China could be valued at more than $1 billion, though advisors' conclusions are not yet known. The French outlet Origami, relying on its own sources, separately reported that Unity plans to close all four of its French offices, which employ 91 people in total. Unity has not commented on either report.

The possible restructuring is linked to the company's weak financial position. Unity ended 2025 with a net loss of $401.5 million. Its share price has fallen 53% since the start of 2026 to $20.70, which is 89% below its 2021 peak. Management nonetheless sees significant potential in AI tools, an area it has been prioritizing, and hopes they will help reverse its fortunes.

A later item appended to the page, dated October 2026, shows how that AI strategy is progressing. Google launched Playground, an experimental browser-based platform that lets users build games from text prompts without programming skills, powered by Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria models. It is positioned as a competitor to Roblox and is initially available only to U.S. residents. Unity announced Unity Spark, a more advanced AI game-development tool built in collaboration with Google. Spark will integrate with the Unity Asset Store, and games made with it can be published to Playground. A closed beta is planned before the end of the year.
