Remedy Entertainment’s 2023 financial results reveal a challenging fiscal year characterized by a 22.2% year-over-year revenue decline, totaling €33.9 million. The company reported an operating loss of €28.6 million, a significant downturn compared to the €563,000 loss recorded in 2022. This financial performance was primarily driven by increased investment in internal game projects and a €7.2 million impairment charge associated with the reboot of the project formerly known as Vanguard, now titled Kestrel.
The studio’s development pipeline remains focused on four key projects. The Max Payne 1&2 Remake, fully funded by Rockstar Games, is currently in the production readiness stage and carries a development budget comparable to that of Alan Wake 2, which analysts estimate at approximately €50 million. Other active projects include Control 2, currently in the proof-of-concept stage, and the co-op spin-off Codename Condor, which is in production readiness. The company aims to leverage its established Alan Wake and Control franchises to drive long-term growth and more consistent revenue streams.
Looking ahead to 2024, management anticipates improvements in both revenue and profitability, though these projections remain contingent on strategic decisions regarding the publishing model for the Control franchise. While Alan Wake 2 achieved success as the fastest-selling game in the studio's history—reaching 1.3 million copies within three months—the company continues to balance its self-publishing ambitions with external financing partnerships. The overall strategy emphasizes scaling high-recognition brands while navigating the financial complexities of large-scale game development.
