This genre is played by over 60% of mobile gamers in the West and nearly 50% in the East.
Puzzle game design is examined here through highlights from GameRefinery's Genre and Great Games report, produced with Facebook Gaming and Facebook IQ, which found that genre accounts for 49% of the reason players choose the games they play. The full 88-page study covered four markets and four genres. This installment isolates puzzle, aiming to point developers toward standout features worth considering for new titles, with emphasis on Match3, Hidden Object and Word subgenres.
Puzzle is broadly popular, played by over 60% of mobile gamers in the west and nearly half in the east. Its revenue significance is far more pronounced in western markets, where it is by far the highest-grossing genre.
Engagement features center on live events and varied level types, particularly in Match3. Battle passes, popularized by Fortnite, have spread into Match3 (Homescapes was an early US adopter) and suit an audience motivated by completing milestones, helping offset the lack of a natural reward pool like mid-core characters and cosmetics. Hidden Object games such as Seekers Notes add horizontal PvE content, including match3 and memory mini-modes, for players who favor single-player experiences.
Community features are growing rapidly, with guilds emerging as a leading trend. Guild wars and team competitions, as in Homescapes, draw on players' sense of duty to contribute. Top Word games, including Words With Friends 2, use synchronous, asynchronous and co-op PvP modes, showing that casual audiences, especially in the west, respond to competitive depth.
Monetization among top-grossing puzzle titles is largely uniform, with limited-time offers, purchase bundles and piggy banks standing out. Incentivized ads are increasingly common in top US Match3 games, such as Angry Birds Dream Blast, offering tangible rewards, temporary boosts and revives as a friendlier alternative to in-app purchases that can also build loyalty.
