Gamecity Hamburg, a location initiative based in Germany, awarded 398,000 euros in non-repayable grants to support the development of six digital game prototypes in 2022. The primary objective of this funding program is to assist Hamburg-based developers, start-ups, and studios in creating high-quality prototypes capable of competing in the international games market. The initiative underscores a broader commitment to fostering local talent and strengthening the regional games industry.
The selection process for the 2022 funding round involved an evaluation of 18 project applications by a committee of industry experts. The committee assessed candidates based on project presentations, market potential, team structure, and the ability to promote young talent. The six successful projects include Hexagone by Tiny Roar (80,000 euros), Super Party Verse by Super Crowd Entertainment (80,000 euros), Dein Skat by Bestjack Entertainment (70,000 euros), Alchymia by Pseudoscience Interactive (70,000 euros), Prospector by Symmetry Break Studio (70,000 euros), and Monstersongs VR by Denise Koch (28,000 euros).
The program demonstrates a clear synergy with other regional support structures, as three of the six funded projects were developed by alumni of the Games Lift Incubator. Since its inception in 2020, the Prototype Funding program has provided 1,240,000 euros to support 22 distinct game prototypes. By consistently investing in early-stage development, Gamecity Hamburg aims to maintain a positive growth trajectory for the local games sector, with future funding cycles planned to continue this support for emerging and established developers alike.
