The growth counters concerns about the game's long-term sustainability.
Pokémon GO demonstrated significant financial growth throughout 2018, generating $795 million in global gross revenue. This figure represents a 35 percent increase over the previous year, effectively countering concerns regarding the long-term sustainability of the mobile title. The performance was bolstered by a strong year-end, with December 2018 revenue exceeding $75 million, a 32 percent year-over-year increase compared to December 2017.
The revenue growth is attributed to a consistent strategy of feature updates and content releases, most notably the introduction of head-to-head multiplayer functionality. These initiatives drove daily player spending to an average of nearly $2.2 million in 2018, up from $1.6 million in 2017. Since its launch in July 2016, the game has accumulated $2.2 billion in total lifetime gross revenue across the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Geographically, the United States remained the largest market, contributing $262 million or 33 percent of total annual revenue. Japan followed as the second-largest market, accounting for $239 million or 30 percent of total revenue, reflecting a notable increase from its 25 percent share in 2017. These insights are derived from Sensor Tower Store Intelligence data, which tracks global mobile application performance. Given the sustained engagement levels observed throughout 2018, projections suggest the title is well-positioned to reach $3 billion in cumulative lifetime revenue by the end of 2019.
