Operating profit also saw a minor decrease.
Paradox Interactive’s financial results for the first quarter of 2024 reveal a period of stable revenue alongside significant operational challenges regarding product quality. The company reported revenue of SEK 482.1 million ($44.4 million), representing a marginal 0.1% year-over-year decline. Operating profit also saw a slight decrease of 1%, settling at SEK 154.4 million ($14.2 million). Despite these steady financial figures, leadership acknowledged a pressing need to improve the consistency and quality of its game releases to better align with player expectations.
The company’s revenue remains heavily concentrated in the PC market, which accounted for 83.8% of total earnings, followed by consoles at 12% and mobile at 2.7%. Geographically, the United States remains the primary market, contributing 84% of total revenue. Key revenue drivers during this period included established titles such as Cities: Skylines, Crusader Kings III, Hearts of Iron IV, and Stellaris. However, the quarter was marked by difficulties with new content, specifically the poorly received Beach Properties expansion for Cities: Skylines II, which necessitated a transition to a free-to-play model following intense negative community feedback.
Operational adjustments were also noted, with the company’s total headcount decreasing from 649 to 594 employees over the three-month period ending March 31, 2024. While the company maintains a strong cash position to navigate current market turbulence, the focus remains on stabilizing the performance of existing projects and refining development processes. The release of the 4X strategy title Millennia served as a strategic attempt to enter a new genre, though it received mixed initial reception, leaving the company to focus on long-term development and iteration for the title.
