At least 1,003 professionals lost their jobs in April 2024.
The global video game industry experienced a significant surge in workforce reductions during April 2024, with at least 1,003 professionals losing their jobs. This figure represents a 132.7% increase compared to the 431 layoffs recorded in April 2023. These findings, derived from data tracked by the Game Industry Layoffs project, underscore a persistent period of instability within the sector, as the total number of industry job losses for the first four months of 2024 has already reached approximately 9,400.
Major corporate restructuring efforts drove much of this activity. Take-Two Interactive accounted for the largest single reduction, cutting approximately 600 positions as part of a broader strategy to reduce office footprints and cancel game projects. Other notable workforce contractions included the closure of Possibility Space, which resulted in 70 job losses, and significant staff reductions at Singularity 6, Ubisoft, and Relic Entertainment. Numerous smaller studios, including Kwalee, NCSoft, and KeokeN Interactive, also contributed to the monthly total.
The actual scale of these layoffs is likely higher than the reported figures, as some industry departures remain untracked by public databases. For instance, mobile developer Belka Games recently reduced its workforce by 20%, a move not fully captured in the primary dataset. Given that the total number of layoffs for all of 2023 was estimated at 10,500, the industry is currently on a trajectory to significantly exceed the previous year’s total volume of job cuts.
