Academic Advantage. Mobile-based serious games significantly outperform traditional lecture-based instruction in improving conceptual understanding of complex subjects.
The integration of mobile augmented reality and serious games into higher education serves as a transformative pedagogical tool for teaching complex, abstract subjects such as electromagnetism. By utilizing a design-based research methodology, this study evaluates the efficacy of the mobile game Parallel, which employs 3D visualization and interactive simulations on tablet devices to bridge the gap between theoretical physics and practical application. The primary objective is to determine whether immersive, technology-driven environments can outperform traditional lecture-based instruction in fostering conceptual understanding among college-level physics students.
Quantitative findings demonstrate a clear academic advantage for students utilizing these digital tools, as evidenced by a significantly higher average improvement on conceptual assessments compared to control groups. Qualitative feedback further underscores that the game’s capacity to render invisible electromagnetic phenomena into observable, three-dimensional models is the critical driver of this success. Students report that the interactive nature of the platform facilitates real-time verification of physical principles, effectively transforming abstract spatial concepts into concrete learning experiences.
While the research confirms that augmented reality fosters a more learner-centered and engaging environment, it also highlights areas for iterative improvement. Participants noted minor challenges regarding technical implementation, task repetition, and the need for expanded playtime to fully realize the educational potential of the software. Ultimately, the evidence suggests that mobile-based serious games provide a robust, scalable alternative to conventional teaching methods. By creating immersive, contextual learning spaces, these technologies successfully align with modern pedagogical goals, offering a viable path forward for enhancing student engagement and mastery of complex scientific material in mobile-first educational settings.
