Supply chain constraints and AAA title delays caused the 2022 adjustment.
The global games industry has experienced shifting revenue projections over the last several years, reflecting a transition from pandemic-era growth to a more complex market environment. In 2022, the industry faced a notable downward revision in revenue expectations, with forecasts adjusted to $196.8 billion. This adjustment was primarily driven by supply chain constraints and the widespread delay of major AAA titles, which tempered earlier, more optimistic growth estimates.
Despite these mid-term fluctuations, long-term industry outlooks remain positive. By 2026, the market is projected to reach a record-breaking $213.9 billion in revenue. A significant catalyst for this growth is the release of high-profile titles such as Grand Theft Auto VI, which is expected to drive a 17.5% spike in console game sales. Across all segments, mobile gaming continues to dominate the market share, with 3.1 billion of the world’s 3.7 billion gamers engaging with mobile devices as of 2026.
Geographically, the Asia-Pacific region remains the largest contributor to global spending, accounting for $100.7 billion in 2026. While North America maintains a strong second position, the Middle East and Africa represent the fastest-growing markets, with a projected 10.3% increase in spending. The total global player base is expected to continue its steady climb, with projections suggesting the number of gamers will surpass 4 billion by 2029. These findings underscore a resilient industry that, while susceptible to short-term production delays and macroeconomic pressures, maintains a consistent trajectory of expansion across mobile, PC, and console platforms.
