They tie this pattern to mainstream gaming trends and to the violent episodes found in many myths.
This paper examines how mythological video games can move beyond their dominant reliance on combat and violence to model other aspects of mythic narrative through gameplay mechanics. Its authors observe that violence functions as a default mechanic in mythological games, reflecting broader trends in mainstream gaming as well as the violent episodes found in many myths themselves. Acclaimed titles such as Hades, God of War Ragnarök, and Black Myth: Wukong, along with smaller projects, illustrate this pattern, while a few recent games have begun to question or avoid violence altogether.
The central question is how games can use their basic mechanical building blocks to explore mythological storytelling in counter-hegemonic ways. The paper surveys five mechanical categories: metamorphosis, which draws on shapeshifting across world mythologies; heroism, which uses systems such as the kleos meter in Warriors: Legends of Troy and the aristeiai in A Total War Saga: Troy to represent the exceptional, exemplary hero; extraordinary movement, which models rapid traversal of vast mythic spaces; dying and rising, which integrates death and resurrection into narrative progression, as in Hades and Herc's Adventures; and interactions between gods and mortals, as in Age of Mythology and Asgard's Wrath 2.
The analysis acknowledges that several of these mechanics remain entangled with combat, since transformations and heroic bursts of power are often used in fighting. Even so, the authors argue that these examples show how mythic motifs beyond weapon use can be translated into gameplay. The work is positioned as a contribution to mythological game studies, aiming to expand the vocabulary through which games express mythological meaning.
