Create free accounthello welcome to Pocket Gamer top business YouTube channel i'm john hall and we are playing Guardian stone or we're being sold something in garden stone who please lose that one coming and so oh I've logged in so won't give five VIP points so I played God in stone a while back as part of our first time user experience playlist and I have been in my own way attempting to play it and and enjoy it and is some things I have enjoyed and some things I have been confused about which is kind of the point in this video and I think you can see maybe both aspects is innate in this single screen so this is the menu screen and and there's a lot going on isn't
there Stephanie um and it's just loads of loads of icons it's just surely too much and lots of things flashing and there's subtle demon cherub throwing up and down and hopefully they're the in-game characters then there's things that cover bit of a sheen on them and so to start off with what I like about it so I do like the art style and think I really like is how they the user experience works so if we assume all these these terrible icons on there how you actually interact with it is you as you can see there I kind of swype around so this is the kind of like hope we put them fountain so you know if he goes in cup you know if I move it off he walked off and backing him but I can go down to what's
down there there's a little Goblin in the tavern I can go and see there and I can do some form of defence pi have to say the men probably this game is I just really don't know I told what's going on with it I could swipe over here I've been going to another library or something and go and do some some mission these are just basically just time missions i do anything in them but that took eight hours and i get some XP okay and but that was kind of odd wasn't it so do this one again this one take took eight hours and again it doesn't that doesn't look so nice but this kind of weird okay box just looks like like no one's been any time on that too but my so I can go off and dispatch one of my Guardians it's called Guardian stones of all these Guardians again I don't really know what they do but I can Agnes and gopher do dispatch her okay but
again it's kind of like to get back I time to press that would button but this one I'm here is very nice I even can see I'm in this kind of room candles and stuff and I'm venturi away in the mall go to this bit here wish I can do some training my skills lists I'm going to school but I could do this this this is this is the bane of my life earlier I've got these Guardians this is the where you kind of do stuff with them so this who got here actually is so I could set as a rep than all that means I could evolve level up or upgrade or extract her essences or something these she's got these runes attached to where I could preview tr6 I mean okay no idea
what that was let's go chat is yeah could I volume no neither garden the same tears the one being a bold as well as a garden essent oh really move so yeah so that I like this bit oh there we go is the the wharf ultimo come back door so and Phil is upgrading something that the new Phil is so we can do something here where we can this is something I hope you understand I can upgrade my equipment that's pretty straightforward actually it's the one bit again in strip all right I know just there is nice is a big dragon age using to do spitting and go over here and another goblin is in some little shop
that way and then go up and there's a change mode so i really like this I think there's some really lovely elements but most of it it's so it's a an asian-inspired game so the polisher is a Korean company and just whoo whose is whose dad's 37 he's a bold is Guardian to tier 6 I mean just random stuff going on tap that go on here I cannot buy things from the and I'm being slightly over the top of this kind of stuff but I just don't think it's very odd that parts of the UI I think I'm really good I mean actually quite like these as well this is the mission structure so I bought on an exhibition that was the thing you saw me do before were it sometimes people on a mission
you can see the quests has new sub quests but again it's like quests and sub Preston there's this one here which is a bit more of a kind of a proper question ago actually going to the game which will not do but if this is a very Asian and much more about the metagame and just so much just kind of sits so much kind of using come n u UI stuff down on if I can befriend people when I mean don't hit any of these people are at me they just random players if I do a very interesting woman before why does it say five but there's just the so much going on and it's probably being a bit of an idiot partly just this game is just throws everything at you and just ask
you to kind of deal with it and I'm sure there are some people who play lot more RPGs the million of the imagine the career but it's not gone through a language barrier thing is just kind of get it but I've tapped on stuff I think the long enough I 30 horses honey I've ruined that I mean again it all adds up to something but it's not not something I can gain lose it kind of annoys me because ha hum degree and professional we spend his life playing free play mobile games but this is just one liked it's just I can't get a grip on it have any part of it and even if i play the actual the mission stuff i really don't know what's going on that either to be totally Frank which is sad
and this is not to totally criticize the game and the developer and the Papa sure but I do think it is it is a kind of a cautionary tale for for Western developers going into China no I'm sure Chinese good players would have exact same issue or for you know Korean publishers bringing in games the west or whatever however way it's being chopped up there are these cultural differences and I think there are equally mobile is about making things very obvious and very easy and very accessible and even if I understood what's going on this game just all this user interface stuff it miles and miles too much is this is this is gonna pair pc level or loss of interface just make it go away so yeah so normally we try be positive I thought I will not being totally negative about the game
aight i did I have kind of enjoyed to degree trying to work out what's going on before cut kind of giving up and just um here's the saying I don't understand it but this is kind of stuff we try and do unplug a little bit we try and find we try and play off to the games i was playing clash royale with my stuff we also try and play the more obscure games because some of them are you know odd of the hits of tomorrow and some of them just have very interesting things that will get picked up on and be used by other developers this just is not one that just what has worked for me at least but if you subscribe to our youtube channel hopefully I maybe you maybe you really like kind of God in stone you can you can tell us all about it in the comments but if you do subscribe you know we play lot of food play more games and hopefully your friends and recommendations of stuff that you can download it and play and enjoy that's kind of the point of doing
this car stuff so thanks for watching and hope to see you again soon and don't forget to subscribe goodbye you
Guardian Stone serves as a case study in the complexities of mobile game design, specifically highlighting the friction between intricate Asian-market RPG mechanics and Western user expectations. The game features a dense, multi-layered interface that presents a significant barrier to entry for players unfamiliar with its specific design language. While the title incorporates high-quality art assets and fluid navigation mechanics, the sheer volume of icons, flashing notifications, and overlapping systems creates a cluttered user experience that obscures core gameplay loops.
The game’s structure relies heavily on a complex metagame involving character evolution, rune management, and time-based mission dispatching. These systems are often opaque, leaving players to navigate upgrade paths and skill training without clear guidance. Although certain elements, such as equipment upgrades and mission tracking, are functional and well-designed, they are frequently overshadowed by an overwhelming amount of secondary information and social features that lack intuitive context.
Ultimately, the experience illustrates the challenges inherent in cross-cultural game localization and design. The dense, PC-inspired interface density conflicts with the mobile industry’s standard emphasis on accessibility and immediate clarity. While the game offers depth for dedicated RPG enthusiasts, the lack of a streamlined onboarding process or simplified UI makes it difficult for a broader audience to engage with its mechanics. The title stands as a cautionary example for developers regarding the importance of balancing feature-rich gameplay with a user-friendly interface, suggesting that even high-quality assets can be undermined by a failure to prioritize intuitive design.
