The total sales volume increased from 2.69 billion euros in 2014.
The German computer and video games industry maintained a positive growth trajectory throughout 2015, driven by ongoing innovation in platforms and business models. The total market value for games and associated hardware reached 2.81 billion euros, representing a 4.5 percent increase over the 2.69 billion euros recorded in 2014. This expansion highlights the sector's status as a highly dynamic component of the German media and cultural landscape.
Market data reveals growth across both hardware and software segments. Gaming console revenue rose by 6.5 percent to 825 million euros, while the broader digital games market grew by 3.5 percent to 1.99 billion euros. Within the software category, performance varied by segment: while traditional game sales declined by 3.5 percent to 1.21 billion euros, they remained the largest revenue contributor. Conversely, the free-to-play sector experienced significant momentum, with revenue from virtual goods and extra content surging 18 percent to 562 million euros. Additionally, game subscriptions generated 145 million euros, a 5 percent increase, and the newly tracked "hybrid toys" or "toys-to-life" segment contributed 72 million euros to the total market.
The findings are based on comprehensive data compiled by GfK and GfK Entertainment. The methodology utilizes a robust, ongoing consumer panel survey of 25,000 individuals, ensuring a representative view of purchasing and usage habits across Germany. This analysis, provided by the German Games Industry Association (BIU), underscores the industry's shift toward diverse monetization strategies and evolving consumer engagement models.
