This marks a significant shift in Riot Games' competitive ecosystem. The tournament will be a primary qualifying phase for the EWC.
Riot Games has integrated the 2026 LEC EMEA Masters into the qualification pathway for the Esports World Cup (EWC), marking a significant shift in the developer’s competitive ecosystem. The EMEA Masters Winter tournament, scheduled to begin on March 9, 2026, will serve as the primary qualifying phase for the EWC. The top two European Regional League (ERL) teams from this event will earn the opportunity to compete against 10 LEC teams for a spot at the EWC, which is hosted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The tournament features 36 ERL teams competing across three distinct stages: the Champions Round, the Group Stage, and the Playoffs. While LEC Academy teams are permitted to participate in the EMEA Masters, they are ineligible to qualify for the EWC Online Qualifier. To accommodate this expanded schedule, Riot Games has implemented minor adjustments to the ERL Spring Split, ensuring that playoff matches for the EMEA Masters do not conflict with other regional events.
This development reflects a broader strategic alignment between Riot Games and the Saudi Arabian government-funded Esports World Cup. While Riot previously maintained a cautious stance regarding such partnerships, the company has now fully committed several of its major titles to the EWC and the Esports Nations Cup. This collaboration has drawn scrutiny from international human rights organizations, which have raised concerns regarding the use of these events for sports washing. The 2026 EMEA Masters structure underscores the increasing influence of state-backed funding on the global esports tournament landscape.
