KLab
KLab’s fiscal year 2019 performance reflects a period of significant transition characterized by a decline in annual profitability and a strategic pivot toward global market expansion. While the company generated over 10 billion yen in overseas revenue, total annual operating profit fell by 66.5% to 1,673 million yen. The fourth quarter showed a 15.4% revenue increase to 8,732 million yen, bolstered by the full-quarter contribution of Love Live! School Idol Festival ALL STARS and the continued stability of Captain Tsubasa: Dream Team. However, these gains were offset by increased promotional expenditures and a 1,300 million yen impairment loss associated with Magatsu Wahrheit, resulting in a quarterly operating loss of 37 million yen.
The company’s primary objective is to transform Japanese intellectual properties into universal assets capable of sustained international performance. This strategy involves narrowing development efforts to core competencies in action RPGs, sports simulations, and rhythm games, while simultaneously diversifying revenue streams through the introduction of casual games, subscription models, and in-game advertising. These efforts aim to mitigate the risks associated with new title development, which faced setbacks in 2019, including the cancellation of the global version of YU☆YU☆HAKUSHO 100% Maji Battle and delays for Tales of Crestoria.
Looking toward fiscal year 2020, KLab has established a guidance range of 35,000 to 40,000 million yen in revenue and 1,000 to 3,000 million yen in operating profit. Achieving these targets depends on a leaner organizational structure and a collaborative support model that leverages strategic partnerships to manage and co-develop titles for global audiences. By prioritizing long-term title sustainability and enhanced international marketing, the company seeks to stabilize its financial trajectory and capitalize on the enduring popularity of established franchises like BLEACH Brave Souls.
