This virtual competition will culminate in an in-person event. It is part of the 'Olympic Esports Week' in Singapore.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has launched the Olympic Esports Series, a global virtual competition culminating in an in-person event held during the inaugural Olympic Esports Week in Singapore from June 22–25, 2023. The initiative aims to integrate competitive gaming into the Olympic framework by focusing on titles that mirror real-world sports and are supported by international governing bodies.
The selected lineup for the series includes nine titles: Tic Tac Bow (archery), Just Dance (dance), WBSC eBaseball Power Pros (baseball), Chess.com (chess), Zwift (cycling), Gran Turismo (motorsports), Virtual Regatta (sailing), Tennis Clash (tennis), and virtual Taekwondo. Notably, the selection excludes prominent professional esports titles, such as those in the first-person shooter or battle royale genres, reflecting the IOC’s long-standing opposition to games containing violent content.
Industry analysts observe that this strategy signals a clear vision for the IOC to govern esports through a sports-oriented lens. By prioritizing titles with real-world counterparts, the committee seeks to maintain regulatory control similar to traditional athletic disciplines. However, this approach has drawn criticism for failing to engage with the established professional esports ecosystem, which is primarily driven by game publishers rather than traditional sports federations. Experts suggest that this move could lead to a bifurcation of the industry, separating IOC-sanctioned, sports-focused gaming from the broader, publisher-led competitive landscape.
