The Esports Advocate
Arslan Siddique, known as Arslan Ash, was banned by the IESF for violating anti-doping rules during the 2022 World Esports Championship.
The International Esports Federation (IESF) recently issued a two-year ban against professional Tekken player Arslan Siddique, known as Arslan Ash, following a positive test for prohibited anabolic androgenic steroids during the 2022 World Esports Championship. The IESF applied World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standards to the case, resulting in a retroactive period of ineligibility spanning from April 2023 to April 2025. This sanction would effectively invalidate the player's results and prize earnings across several major international tournaments held during that timeframe.
The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) has publicly rejected the IESF’s ruling, stating that its members are under no obligation to enforce the decision. ESIC argues that the WADA Prohibited List is designed for traditional physical sports and is not appropriate for the esports industry. Instead, ESIC advocates for a specialized, science-based anti-doping framework that only restricts substances with a proven, material impact on digital gameplay, such as stimulants like Adderall.
The conflict highlights a fundamental disagreement regarding the governance of competitive gaming. While the IESF utilizes traditional athletic regulatory models, ESIC maintains that applying such standards to esports is fundamentally flawed. Arslan Ash has publicly stated he was unaware that the substances were prohibited in an esports context and maintained that they were not used to gain a competitive advantage in his discipline. The situation underscores the ongoing industry challenge of establishing unified, purpose-built integrity standards that distinguish between physical athletic performance and digital competition.
