An analysis of the top 30 best-selling video game brands in the United Kingdom reveals that Electronic Arts holds a dominant position in the market. Based on data from GfK, which tracks boxed game sales in the UK from 1995 to 2022, these top 30 franchises have collectively generated $34 billion in revenue over the last 27 years. The findings highlight the significant commercial impact of long-running, annualized, or high-volume intellectual properties within the British gaming landscape.
Electronic Arts leads the industry in this segment, serving as the publisher for nine of the top 30 franchises, most notably the FIFA series, which ranks as the number one brand in the UK. Other major contributors to the publisher's success include The Sims, Need for Speed, and Battlefield. Following Electronic Arts, the most represented publishers in the top 30 are Nintendo and Warner Bros. with five franchises each, followed by Sony with four and Activision Blizzard with three.
The top ten list is rounded out by major industry staples, including Call of Duty, Mario, Grand Theft Auto, LEGO, Star Wars, Pokémon, and Assassin’s Creed. A notable insight from the data is the reliance of certain franchises on specific breakout titles; for instance, Grand Theft Auto’s fourth-place ranking is heavily bolstered by Grand Theft Auto V, which accounts for 40% of the entire franchise's boxed sales in the region. This data underscores the enduring market power of established brands and the critical role of consistent, high-performing releases in maintaining long-term revenue leadership.
