Genshin Impact has established itself as a dominant force in the mobile gaming sector, generating $3.7 billion in global player spending across the App Store and Google Play during its first two years of operation. Launched on September 28, 2020, the title ranks as the third highest-grossing mobile game worldwide for that period, trailing only Tencent’s PUBG Mobile and Honor of Kings. Notably, the game leads the industry in revenue among titles utilizing gacha-based monetization, significantly outperforming competitors like Rise of Kingdoms and Three Kingdoms Strategic.
The analysis, which utilizes Store Intelligence and Game Intelligence data, highlights the game's ability to defy broader market downturns. While the global mobile games market experienced year-over-year revenue declines in the first half of 2022, Genshin Impact achieved double-digit growth during the same period. Geographically, China serves as the primary market, accounting for approximately 33 percent of total revenue through iOS, followed by Japan at 24 percent and the United States at 17 percent.
The game’s financial success is attributed to a combination of effective gacha mechanics and a consistent live operations strategy that delivers frequent content updates. This approach has allowed developer miHoYo to maintain high player engagement and sustain long-term profitability. While the App Store accounts for the majority of global revenue at 68 percent, the international revenue split is more balanced, with Google Play contributing 48 percent of spending outside of China. These findings underscore the title's status as a significant new intellectual property that has successfully scaled its influence on the global stage.
