This profit figure surpassed the annual profits of major Western publishers, including Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, and Embracer Group.
The financial performance of miHoYo, the developer behind the global hit Genshin Impact, highlights a significant shift in the gaming industry's profitability landscape. Despite being a private company not required to disclose financial statements, data from Chinese state-owned media indicates that miHoYo generated 27.34 billion yuan ($3.83 billion) in revenue and 16.145 billion yuan ($2.26 billion) in net income during 2022. This profit figure surpasses that of several major Western publishers, including Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, and the Embracer Group, during their respective 2022 or 2023 fiscal years.
While miHoYo’s annual profit outperformed these established industry giants, it remains behind larger Chinese conglomerates like Tencent and NetEase, which maintain more diversified business models. The company’s financial success is primarily driven by the sustained performance of Genshin Impact, which has exceeded $4 billion in lifetime mobile revenue, and the strong initial performance of its newer title, Honkai: Star Rail.
The analysis underscores the immense market power of focused, high-performing live-service titles. Although companies like Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts recorded higher total revenues than miHoYo, the latter’s ability to achieve superior net income demonstrates a highly efficient operational model. This financial trajectory has significantly elevated the wealth of miHoYo’s founders, who now rank among the wealthiest individuals in China. These findings reflect a broader trend where specialized, mobile-first developers are increasingly competing with, and in some metrics outpacing, traditional multinational gaming corporations.
