Denson argues they now follow an interactive, labor-based logic in networked digital environments.
Shane Denson's essay argues that seriality in videogames marks a shift from a "parergonal" logic, in which serial figures such as Batman move across analog media and blur the boundary between frame and world, to a "parergodic" logic shaped by the interactive, labor-based navigation of networked digital environments. Building on Aarseth's concept of ergodics, Denson contends that play and computation now take precedence over perceptual mediation, and that the serial figure is reconfigured accordingly. The Batman franchise serves as the central case study, traced from Miller and Moore's 1980s graphic novels through Burton's and Nolan's films to the Arkham games, Telltale's episodic adventures, and Arkham VR.
Denson's analysis centers on how these digital works make labor and alienation visible. The Arkham Asylum simulated glitch and crash, which many players mistook for hardware failure, is read as a revealing moment that exposes the precarity of ergodic play and links it to Sartre's notion of alienated seriality. In later sections, Denson develops the idea of a "practico-alert" condition, in which devices anticipate and respond to users, tightening feedback loops so that algorithmic prediction narrows social agency. Telltale's branching systems and the banal, work-like character of Arkham VR illustrate this tendency, though games may also offer "allegorithms" that expose these dynamics.
The essay's scope is theoretical and interpretive rather than empirical, drawing on media studies, phenomenology, and narratology, with reference to thinkers such as Foucault, Manovich, Sobchack, and Hayles. Denson offers no quantitative data, and his conclusions are speculative. He remains skeptical of utopian participatory-culture narratives, arguing that digital play increasingly generates surplus value for corporations even as the margins of this shift, such as imperfect VR embodiment, remain visible.
