Create free accounthello and welcome to pocketgamer.busy's youtube channel i'm john jordan and this is our first time user experience playlist and today we're playing angry birds action so let's fire it up and it's upside down let me turn that around not upside down for you upside down for me okay oh crash so there we go so really good uh interface zone nothing difficult at the moment we've got a big play button and there's a barcode so rogue's done a lot of uh promotion angry birds action is the game um that it's also kind of um hanging the angry birds film off of angus movie so um there's these barcodes you can scan in um to get extra goodies i haven't got one so there we go so we're going to load up the game and we are straight into the game so it's not messing around i think it's very important there's no push notifications there's no do this or download that so you straight
in there very quickly another thing is very important is you load the game very quickly particularly for a game that is has you want to have wide appeal and and is it's kind of casual in the way that anglebirds is so rescued the eggs drag to launch so it's pretty straightforward so if i if i'm off there it's red so this is the obvious tutorial has all the angry birds kind of concept as an angry bird you're going to pull back it's going to fire off you're gonna hit an egg and it's pinball so there we go so i'm banging around um and i'm on to the next level so there's gonna be three levels i have to do this this one's a bit more complex as we can see here i've got two birds i'm pulling back again i'm collecting coins as i go i'm bashing around i want to get look at that i follow what the tutorial says and i win so that's making me feel good about the game obviously you can't really be too easy in tutorial so where should i be going now and i shouldn't be going there i should be going there i'm getting the hang of this green stuff um so bang bang bang bang oh there we go so it's a bit like
snooker or something bit like pinball you're kind of seeing using the angles but it's still the trajectory stuff that we all know and loving angry birds or the angry birds of obviously kind of uh as they would have done for the film have morphed a little bit with uh proper legs and such like okay so this is interesting so if you look at the top of the screen i've got this an energy system there's a top right of the screen there's a gems diamond systems that's obviously a hard currency these kind of things we know from free to play games and here i have my reward my reward finishing the level i have three keys i can unlock any of these items and i win you can see there i'm winning some uh some gold which i'm sure is the soft currency which is um be useful for something so here we go this is like the let's see the kind of game hub so we can see it's nine days to go for the angry birds movie you can see there's i mean there's good a little bit of other stuff going on here so on the left hand side there's this going i can watch the tunes which is the um
kind of the kind of animated kind of youtube channel and there's this kind of uh this is the bottom i guess is that code thing again is it i've got an email it's asking me to okay connect to facebook and then there's the kind of settings and that's quite prominent i think i know where the settings are so big um nice kind of animation there's the another kind of bird waving at me over there so i'm on this level now level two so it's saying level two my biscuit zero connect to play with friends so i think that's obviously um if you get people to connect to play with friends there's better attention you kind of like trying to see your friends high score all that kind of good social glue so let's not bother about that and let's go and play another level so this time i've got four birds got a rescue and only one egg and there's a bouncer so no green um help this time but should be fairly straightforward there we go didn't collect all the gold oh did i maybe i didn't take it all in one go
this one looks a bit more complex but hopefully this level it shouldn't it should be very easy for me to do it oh no should say yeah fairly easy for me to complete everything without feeling i'm not very good at this level yes we'll be able to play the game and be excited by it this looks a bit harder but hopefully the setting of the pins no so that one was a bit harder um so i've got one more to um but i'm gonna be pretty happy with that and my whatever that is then the bottom is filling up and i get three rewards oh and i've got some some uh i've got a gem that time as well so as we can see we're just going into the game we're just playing it there's no we're not really all beach ball power so immediately every time i play i'm feeling okay i'm doing all right
stuff unlocking if i press on it off we go obviously there's the replayability of angry birds that we kind of know but they've the gameplay's advanced and yeah evolved so we got each ball gives you these bouts gives you more speed okay so really so i don't need to use it's interesting i don't need to use the uh beach ball i could just use the normal bird that i missed okay so we've seen there's a power off when we see this is the other perhaps the bottom there's a snowflake and a ghost and a telescope is um okay this is now getting small complex over again come on you can do it no you can't okay
oh dear i was hopeless so this is the first time am i gonna fail yeah i'm gonna fail so i don't got one more leftover i'm gonna get that no yes yes so probably not very good score on this one harder again so and that and so what i unlocked here a gold crate and let's give me some one hardcover i don't know a few more and my rewards and some beach balls so i'm happy that i i can see that chest is filling up against a bit like the the chest in clash royale where even if
you don't win the game you kind of can get some reward if you destroyed the other person's castle one of their castles so there we go you can see at the top of the screen that there's energy so that's kind of being used up as i play but it's kind of clicking on so all this kind of standard free to play kind of things are here if we go here get gems so this is the store so standard there's a sale thing at the moment the cheapest one is a dollar and the most expensive one actually isn't too expensive so it's at 55 pounds what's that going to be 75 maybe it's not up to the 100 but maybe if i spend some money maybe it will um it will unlock to the more expensive one that's fairly fairly straightforward retailing nothing very complex there so nobody really play the game anymore just this is the point of the first time user experience is just to get the flow um and very smooth i think probably maybe maybe a bit too much on the on the on the icons on the user interface to begin with probably don't need the settings not gonna have to be
quite so big but in terms of the actual gameplay really smooth loads really fast you know i think it's a very good example of when you're looking for a mass market you just want to get them in the game and you want to get them playing and you want to get them happy and you want to get them all i've unlocked that and oh i've got a thing and a you know happy happy happy so good job for rovio who is publisher and tag games the scottish developer um who was the developer so thanks for watching um we do a lot of this analysis or kind of with the quote now i don't know we do a lot of playing of free to play mobile games and just uh particularly looking at the tutorial the first time image experience so if that's kind of thing you like please subscribe when we find games with a bit more depth we also go in and do some analysis of those as well so all about free play mobile games if that's what you're interested in please subscribe and i hope to see you again soon
Angry Birds Action!, developed by Tag Games and published by Rovio, serves as a prime example of a streamlined first-time user experience (FTUE) designed for the mass market. The game prioritizes rapid load times and immediate engagement, bypassing intrusive push notifications or excessive download prompts to place players directly into the core gameplay loop. The mechanics evolve the traditional Angry Birds trajectory-based formula into a pinball-inspired experience, utilizing intuitive drag-to-launch controls that provide instant gratification through clear visual feedback and rewarding progression.
The game architecture incorporates standard free-to-play monetization and retention features, including energy systems, hard and soft currencies, and social integration prompts. A central hub provides access to ancillary content, such as animated shorts and promotional tie-ins for the Angry Birds film, which utilize barcode scanning to bridge physical and digital engagement. The progression system is designed to maintain player morale, offering consistent rewards—such as gold, gems, and power-ups—even when performance on specific levels is suboptimal. This structure mirrors successful mechanics found in titles like Clash Royale, where incremental progress keeps the player invested.
While the user interface is occasionally cluttered with numerous icons and prominent settings, the overall flow is highly effective at onboarding casual users. The game successfully balances accessibility with increasing complexity, ensuring that the initial experience is both welcoming and sufficiently challenging to encourage replayability. By focusing on a smooth, high-speed entry into the core loop, the title effectively demonstrates the importance of minimizing friction in mobile game design to maximize early-stage player retention.
