Embracer Group’s Q1 FY20/21 interim report details a period of record-breaking financial performance, characterized by an 81% year-over-year increase in net sales to SEK 2,069 million. The company’s operational EBIT surged by 249% to SEK 712 million, driven by a combination of successful new game releases, a robust back catalog, the acquisition of Saber Interactive, and increased consumer demand resulting from pandemic-related lockdowns. This growth trajectory is supported by a strong capital position, with SEK 5.1 billion in cash and unutilized credit facilities as of June 30, 2020.
The report highlights a "quality first" strategy, evidenced by high Metacritic scores across key titles such as SnowRunner, which sold over 1 million copies, and strong performances from Satisfactory and Deep Rock Galactic. The company’s investment in game development remains aggressive, with management estimating that total development costs for released games will more than double in FY20/21 to between SEK 1.2 billion and 1.4 billion. As of the end of the quarter, the group maintained a pipeline of approximately 125 game projects involving roughly 3,200 developers.
Geographically, the group continues to expand its publishing footprint, including the rebranding of its US office and planned entry into Asian markets. The business model relies on a mix of owned and licensed intellectual property, with a shift toward digital sales, which now constitute a significant portion of revenue. Despite the digital shift, physical sales also reached an all-time high during the quarter. The company’s methodology for tracking growth includes both organic and proforma metrics, with organic growth reaching 74% for the quarter. Looking ahead, the group maintains a positive outlook, supported by upcoming releases and a strategy focused on both internal studio development and strategic acquisitions.
