Embracer Group Acquires Vertigo Games

Embracer Group has acquired Vertigo Games, a Rotterdam-based developer and publisher specializing exclusively in virtual reality (VR) content. The acquisition aims to capitalize on the maturing VR market by integrating Vertigo’s established development, publishing, and arcade distribution capabilities into Embracer’s Koch Media subsidiary. The deal includes an upfront consideration of €50 million—comprising €40 million in cash and €10 million in shares—alongside a performance-based earnout package of up to €65 million, contingent on operational and financial targets over a ten-year period.

Vertigo Games brings a proven track record in the VR sector, most notably with the success of its co-op zombie shooter, Arizona Sunshine, which ranks as one of the most sold VR titles globally. The studio’s pipeline includes the highly anticipated AAA title After the Fall, which is positioned to leverage the growing install base of VR hardware. Vertigo operates across three distinct business segments: internal studio development, third-party publishing for indie VR developers, and the distribution of content to global VR arcade operators via its proprietary Haze VR platform.

The acquisition is strategically timed to align with the rapid expansion of the standalone VR hardware market, which has significantly lowered barriers to entry for consumers. By maintaining operational autonomy within the Koch Media group, Vertigo intends to scale its headcount and leverage Embracer’s extensive IP catalog to create new VR experiences. This partnership provides Vertigo with the financial stability to pursue aggressive growth in third-party publishing and studio development, positioning the entity to capture market share in an industry that remains largely unconsolidated.
