This analysis examines the economic impact of the Spanish language on video game performance within the Steam marketplace, focusing on titles developed in Spain and Latin American countries. By evaluating 387 games published between 2015–2016 and 2020–2021, the research assesses how linguistic localization strategies influence commercial outcomes, including sales volume, revenue, and user engagement.
The methodology relies on a direct analysis of Steam store pages rather than traditional surveys, utilizing data from the DeVuego database. To estimate financial performance, the study employs established industry multipliers based on user review counts, applying a correction factor for sales periods to determine revenue. Statistical validation was conducted using non-parametric tests, specifically the Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests, to ensure the robustness of the findings across different regions and time periods.
Key findings indicate that while English remains the primary vehicular language for development, the inclusion of Spanish—particularly Spanish from Spain or a combination of both peninsular and Latin American variants—is statistically correlated with higher review counts, increased sales volume, and greater total revenue. Games lacking any Spanish localization were found to be significantly cheaper and lower-performing than those that integrated the language. Furthermore, while Spanish-developed titles generally outperformed their Latin American counterparts in median results, the data suggests that a strategic linguistic approach is essential for all developers in the region to remain competitive in a saturated global market. The study concludes that prioritizing Spanish localization is a vital economic strategy, potentially bolstered by the significant Spanish-speaking demographic in the United States, the world’s largest gaming market.
