This restructuring involved layoffs across multiple departments. Reports estimate the number of affected employees to be in the dozens.
In September 2023, the esports software company eFuse initiated a significant corporate restructuring, resulting in a series of layoffs across multiple departments. While the exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed, reports indicate the cuts involved dozens of staff members. This organizational shift coincided with the company’s decision to postpone its newly launched Creators League, a competitive gaming series featuring prominent content creators and organizations such as MrBeast, Optic Gaming, and the OTK Network.
The postponement followed intense community backlash regarding the project's integration of blockchain technology. Although eFuse utilized a grant from the NEAR Foundation to build a web3-based marketplace for the league, the company faced criticism over the lack of transparency regarding these components. Some participating creators alleged they were not informed about the crypto-related aspects of the initiative prior to signing their agreements. In response, eFuse clarified that the league did not involve the sale of NFTs or cryptocurrency, as all community passes were purchased in USD and lacked transfer or resale utility.
To address the controversy, eFuse implemented a refund process for all passholders and committed to hosting a free-to-enter Fortnite tournament to maintain goodwill with its audience. The company stated that the restructuring is intended to better align its internal resources with its high-performing products. Moving forward, eFuse plans to reflect on the community feedback received during this launch period to refine the structure of the Creators League before rescheduling its events.
