This investment secures an equity stake for Disney in the game developer. It marks Disney's largest entry into the gaming industry to date.
The Walt Disney Company has announced a strategic $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games to acquire an equity stake in the developer. This partnership represents a significant expansion of Disney’s presence in the gaming sector, aiming to integrate its extensive intellectual property portfolio—including Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar—into a new, persistent, and interoperable digital ecosystem.
The collaboration centers on the development of a multiyear project that will function as a metaverse-like environment. Built using Epic’s Unreal Engine, this platform will allow users to play, watch, shop, and engage with Disney’s various franchises alongside the existing Fortnite community. While the specific equity percentage and the total valuation of Epic Games were not disclosed, the deal positions Disney alongside other major investors such as Tencent Holdings and Sony.
Tim Sweeney, CEO and founder of Epic Games, remains the company’s largest shareholder with a controlling stake of approximately 51.4% prior to this transaction. The agreement is currently subject to standard regulatory approvals and closing conditions. By leveraging the reach of Fortnite and the technical capabilities of Unreal Engine, the partnership seeks to create a unified, open ecosystem that bridges the gap between traditional entertainment and interactive gaming experiences.
