The service reached $1 billion in April 2021.
The Disney+ mobile application has surpassed $1.5 billion in worldwide consumer spending, reflecting the platform's sustained growth since its November 2019 launch. Data indicates that the service reached the $1 billion milestone in April 2021, with a record-breaking performance in July 2021, where revenue exceeded launch-month figures by 204 percent. This surge is attributed to the release of high-profile content, including the film Black Widow and the conclusion of the series Loki.
In addition to revenue growth, the application has achieved approximately 246.7 million lifetime installs. Adoption remains strong, with 64 million installs recorded in the first half of 2021, representing a 28 percent year-over-year increase. A significant spike in user acquisition occurred in November 2020, driven by the service’s expansion into South American markets such as Brazil and Argentina.
Marketing strategies for the platform have evolved to prioritize digital channels, specifically desktop video. For instance, 93 percent of the U.S. promotional budget for The Mandalorian was allocated to desktop video platforms like YouTube. While total digital advertising spend for Disney+ decreased by 39 percent in the first seven months of 2021 compared to the previous year, the company continues to focus heavily on desktop video for major releases, while simultaneously shifting its social media investment from Facebook toward Instagram. These findings, derived from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence and Pathmatics platforms, underscore the critical role of mobile and digital-first strategies in the ongoing expansion of subscription video-on-demand services.
